Kenya: Ulinzi, Gor axe coaches after suffering defeats

Gor Mahia and Ulinzi Stars on Monday sent home their entire technical personnel after both clubs lost their weekend Kenyan Premier League matches.

The sacking of Gor’s Cameroonian coach, Anaba Awono, was expected after he was besieged by the club’s angry fans following the 1-0 loss to Karuturi Sports in Naivasha on Sunday.

For Ulinzi coach, Benjamin Nyangweso, after the 2-0 fall to AFC Leopards, also on Sunday, the club’s management decided it was time for him to vacate his place at the bench.

Ulinzi team administrator, Joe Birgen, confirmed the entire bench had been sent packing.

Awono’s short stint as Gor Mahia coach ended on Monday the club’s executive decided to fire all the technical bench officials including the team doctor Sam Ogutu who has served the club for over two decades.

Gor legend John Bobby Ogolla will act as stand in coach while former Ulinzi striker Tom Ogweno will deputise him and act as the team manager. Ogolla starts work tomorrow.

Sources at the club indicate there are several foreign coaches in line to take up the position in the coming weeks.

Club chairman Ambrose Rachier said the club had been forced to take the decision following a spate of poor results that has seen Gor Mahia lose three successive matches.

Gor went down 3-0 to Ferroviaro de Maputo of Mozambique in the Caf Confederation Cup two weekends ago, then returned to lose by a solitary goal to Kenyan Premier League new boys Muhoroni Youth and last Sunday they were on the losing end again in Naivasha to Karuturi.

"We cannot take this (losing streak) any more. Following the string of poor results, we have decided to disband the entire Gor Mahia technical bench with immediate effect," said Rachier at a press conference.

Among those to be sacked include coach Awono, assistant coach Ken Odhiambo and team manager Jolawi Obondo. "When we signed the technical bench officials, we had goals we wanted to achieve.

But it has now become evident that our technical bench is not working towards achieving the set goals. Therefore we have decided to part ways," added the club chair.

Rachier said he was investigating claims of sabotage within the playing unit.
