Ogolla takes over Gor Mahia top job

John "Bobby" Ogolla has finally agreed to a three-month caretaker coach position with Gor Mahia, the Kenyan Premier League club said.

Gor Mahia secretary-general George Bwana however said the position was on a probational basis as the club searched for a suitable coach to hire on a long-term basis.

"We are now looking for a coach to hire permanently, preferably a European," Bwana said on Thursday.

The Gor official said they had already received a lot of interest from candidates from the United Kingdom, Germany and Portugal for the job.

Ogolla, who during negotiations with Gor Mahia earlier in the week said he wanted to be sure of every detail of his engagement before making a commitment, was officially introduced to the playing unit yesterday but will effectively take over next week.

Confederation Cup

Bwana said the new stand-in assistant coach, Tom Ogweno, will handle the team at Saturday’s Confederation Cup preliminary round return leg against Ferroviario Maputo.

"We agreed that since the Confederation Cup is just two days away we will let Ogweno, who linked up with the team earlier this week, to continue," Bwana said."Ogolla may advise but he will not take full charge of the team until after the fixture."

Ogolla and Ogweno take over from Cameroonian Anabwa Awono, who was sacked on Monday together with his entire technical bench for what the club termed poor performance.

Bwana said Ogolla has been given a free hand to come up with his own technical bench.

"One reason we fired the entire bench was that there was a lot of in-fighting," Bwana revealed. "They were not pulling in one direction and we needed to act fast before the situation deteriorated."

He called on Gor fans to be patient and give the players and the new technical team time to come up with a "winning formula".

He said: "They should let the team concentrate. I know the pressure is there and fans want results but you need time to produce these results."

Even as Gor try to regroup, they must overturn a 3-0 scoreline against Ferroviario in Saturday’s clash at Nyayo Stadium.

Ferroviario are expected in Nairobi at 6.25pm on Friday.
