Premiership football returns to Gweru!

Premiership football returns to Gweru!

Finally Gweru has a home-grown football club that will participate in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League in 2012, and it is a club curisouly called Hardbody!

Following a bruising and possibly poorly handled boardroom battle with Tripple B, the Centre for Arbitration ruling recently threw a life-line to Hardbody who were facing expulsion for allegations of having improperly used a player in Division matches.

The Center for Arbotration dismissed Tripple B's case merely on a technicality, citing the fact that Tripple B failed to cite the player in question, Tatenda Chingara as a respondent in the case, despite the Arbitration team conceding that Hardbody had illegally used the player.

Now, that is, hopefully going to be water under the bridge and Gweru can look forward to premiership again.

There is excitement in Gweru and the club owners are naturally over the moon.

“My prayers were finally answered. It had been a horrendous six months for me and I am glad it is now over,” Takesure Sibanda, sponsor of the Hardbody recently told The Sunday Mail of Zimbabwe.

Sibanda however, understands that the euphoria of making the 16 team PSL must give way to real hard work on the ground and more funding is needed to keep the team focussed on the real business in the PSL for 2012 and beyond.

“I am calling upon individuals and companies, especially those that are based in Gweru, to come forward and form partnerships to run this club. Hardbody belongs to the people of Gweru and surrounding areas. We desperately need the support of the community,” was Sibanda's cry for help.

The Sunday Mail records that Hardbody was formed in 2004 as a social side before getting affiliated to the Division Two league during the 2009 season.

The club was subsequently promoted to the Division One league during the 2010 season before finishing a credible third in their debut season in Division One.

The Gweru community will hope that the team stays with the big boys of the PSL beyond the 2012 season.
