Pagels is not our resurrected Fabisch

Former Warriors coach the late Reinhardht Fabisch

The newly appointed Zimbabwe Football Association Technical Advisor, German national Klaus-Dieter Pagels arrived in Zimbabwe early this month and wasted no time in clarifying that he will not play a similar role to what the late Reinhardht Fabisch ended up playing in Zimbabwe during the golden era of the 'Dream Team'.

Experienced German coach Pagels, arrived in Zimbabwe as part of the Zimbabwe/Germany government to government agreement aimed at assisting ZIFA in speacial technical areas of football development. Fabisch had arrived under a simlar arrangement in the 90s, but the late firebrand coach ended up accepting to coach Zimbabwe's Warriors. He is credited with creating the soccer mania spirit in Zimbabwe.

Pagels appears determined to avoid playing a Fabisch act. Speaking to Newsday at the airport upon his arrival on 5 August, the German coach emphasised his role in youth football development.

“I want to assist in the development of junior football for both the men and women’s teams. However, on my last visit I noticed that there are no resources in that area", stated Pagels.

He did not however rule out offering assistance to the Warriors coach to be appointed.

"However, I will always be available to assist whoever is appointed as the senior national team coach in any way I can but at the moment my main aim would be to assist junior teams, " Pagels clarified.

Pagels reportedly played his club football within German's Third tier division, and coached in the First division since 1978.

The veteran coach is not new to Africa, having served as assistant coach to Theo Buker when he coached Ismailia of Egypt some few years ago.

ZIFA recently invited applications for the senior soccer national team coaching position, and Pagels is not an applicant for the vacant position. Pagels does not have any discernible experience of coaching a national football team.
