Dynamos pick up first win, TP Mazembe march on

Dynamos of Zimbabwe have picked up their first win in ACL

Zimbabwe and Southern Africa's sole Champions League representatives Dynamos Football Club collected their first points in Harare today. They defeated Entente Setif of Algeria 1-0 in Harare on a beautiful Sunday afternoon.

Dynamos had gone two games without collecting a single point out of a possible six, following their surprise 0-2 home loss to TP Mazembe during their Group A opening match and a controversial 0-1 loss  away at Esperance in Tunisia.

The only goal of the match in Harare was scored by attacking midfielder Wonder Sithole in the 30th minute. Dynamos enjoyed more ball possession than their opponents in the first half. Sithole contributed a brilliant individual effort, beating the entire visiting team's defence in the process before scoring a contender for goal of the season.

A first set of three points lifted DeMbare from the foot of the table in Group A to 3rd place, while Setif now anchor the log with a single point after three matches.

TP Mazembe of the DR Congo, continued their march towards semi-final qualification in Group A, with a convincing 2-1 victory over battling Esperance in Lubumbashi. Esperance, who were group leaders before the Lubumbashi clash with 6 points, have surrendered the lead to Mazembe who now have 7.

Defending African Club champions Mazembe found themselves behind after Esperance had taken a 41st lead through Michael Eneramo. To their credit the Congolese quickly recovered and equalised before half time from an Alain Kaluyituka strike.

With the match looking poised for a draw, Ngandu Kasongo hit the winner to break the hearts of Esperance and torch wild celebrations from the Mazembe camp. The DR Congo team now sits aloft at the top with 7 points, just a point more than the Tunisians.

The battle for the first two places in Group A who will qualify for semi-finals is far from over. With Dynamos having picked up their first points, its difficult to rule out a revival by Southern Africa's best performing club in the past decade.

A victory over Esperance at home in Harare and a possible surprise away victory against Entete Setif might just bring the Zimbabweans back into contention. The chances look slim however, considering that DeMbare still have to play two away matches including one at TP Mazembe. Yet experience counts in competitions of this nature, and the Harare giants are experienced campaigners in the Champions League.
