Pirates in title race control after beating SS Utd
Orlando Pirates have assumed advantage in the tight ABSA Premiership title race following a last minute Lucky Lekgwathi goal gave them a hard fought 2-1 win over ten-men Super Sport United at Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane last night.

Orlando Pirates went ahead through Tokelo Rantie in the 29th minute who was given acres of space to beat Rowen Fernandez in the box, much against the run of play as Supersport appeared to dominate Bucs for about 10 minutes after the opening 15 minutes.

United came back strongly from the break and their pressure paid off when Sameehg Doutie scored a fantastic free-kick from the left flank to the dismay of Pirates fans.

Disaster struck for United on 75 minutes when the referee, whose decisions against the home team were questionable the entire night, sent off Supersport's central midfielder Edwin Gyimah for a second bookable offence after he in fact appeared to have been fouled by Andile Jali.

Supersport seemed to have been able to starve off the pressure from the marauding Buccaneers, but were undone by an opportunistic goal from Lekgwathi at the death to torch wild celebrations from the Bucs players, coaching staff and fans.

Pirates moved to 52 points with the win and are currently in control of the title race, but all that could change if Sundowns beat Kaizer Chiefs on Wednesday night to tie the points and return back on top by virtue of a superior goal difference.

What appears to complicate matters for Sundowns is that Chiefs have lost four games in a row and will be eager to prevent chaos from their fans on Wednesday night. Amakhosi might therefore give a spirited performance and derail Downs' title ambitions.

Any slip-ups for the chasing pack that includes Bucs, Downs, Supersport and Moroka Swallows will be fatal at this stage. Supersport might just have kissed their chances good bye.

Yet, it must be remembered, this is football, and its a game of surprises. Supersport might just sneak back into serious contention. Swallows remain the dark horses for the title, but if the truth be told, it is Downs and Bucs who hold the key at this stage.
