Temwanjira nets for Vaslui in league at last!

Mike Temwanjira scored a goal in FC Vslui"s 3-2 win over Targu Mores
Mike Temwanjira, one of the few Zimbabwean players who have been able to last in European topflight football for nearly a decade now, scored a goal in his Romanian club FC Vaslui's 3-2 win away from home in a Liga 1 match against Targu Mores last night.

Vaslui's win takes their points tally to 55 in the highly regarded Romanian Liga 1, and with it came a leap back into 3rd position, tied on points with second-placed Rapid Bucuresti, and just three points behind log leaders CFR Cluj.

Romania's Liga has the privilege of fielding two teams apiece for the UEFA Champions League and Europa league every year, and the league was at some stage considered the 7th best league in Europe.

The last time that the 29-year old Zimbabwean international had scored for his club in the league was on 11 September against Dinamo Bucharesti in his club's 3-1 home victory.

Ever since then, the big centre forward had to be content by scoring a goal here and there in  Vaslui's Europa League campaign, where they were knocked out despite having started fairly well in group stages.

He has now scored a total of four goals for Vaslui this season in the league only. He has also found the back of the net a few times in the Europa League. In 126 matches for Vaslui since 2007, Mbozha has contributed 28 league goals.

Temwanjira has been playing football in Europe since 2003, when he was signed by  Serbian topflight club Javoc Ivanjica for three years, before spending a season at Borac Cacak between 2006/2007, from where he moved to Romania with FC Vaslui after suffering racial abuse from the Serbian club's fans.

Big Mike or Mbozha, as Temwanjira is popularly known by CAPS United fans back home in Zimbabwe, is the preferred first choice central striker at Vaslui, a club fighting for the title or at least a place in the Champions League next season. Vaslui has experience in contesting  UEFA competitions.

Despite Mbozha's failure to find the back of the net often at Vaslui this season, a task which is left now to Liga 1 leading scorer Wesley of Brazil, Temwanjira's club coach still picks him up in the starting line-up. One may ask, why?

The simple reason why Big Mike is still the preferred target man at Vaslui has to do not only with his size and physique, which is always a factor in choosing such role players nonetheless. The main reason for winning the coach's heart is Temwanjira's ability to function as a complete team player. He plays more for the team than for individual glory.

Big Mike creates many scoring opportunities for team mates, especially Wesley who is the run-away leading scorer in Liga 1 with more than 22 goals thus far.

Temwanjira is the kind of a strike partner that Warriors talisman and regular scorer Knowledge Musona needs upfront to create many scoring opportunities.

The Zimbabwe Warriors squad has many players who are known goal scorers such as Musona, Ovidy Karuru, Khama Billiat and even Archieford Gutu when he comes on as a substitute. Having a big striker who knows how to hold off defenders and create chances for others, is exactly what Zimbabwe needs in the 2014 World Cup qualifiers.

There is need for more players in the Warriors squad who compete in top European competitions like Europa, UEFA and competitive European domestic leagues like the Romanian Liga 1.
