Zimbabwe Warriors needed a slender 1-0 victory from regular scorer Knowledge Musona to progress to the next round of the Africa Cup of Nations 2013 qualifiers, to progress on an away goals' rule after a 2-2 aggregate scoreline.
Musona, who grabbed the all important goal from a Khama Billiat cross in the 43rd minute, was also the hero for the Warriors in Bujumbura when he equalised for Zimbabwe before Valery Nahayo scored in the dying minutes of the game to give the Swallows a shock 2-1win at home in February.
A lot of factors will make Musona more than a hero for Zimbabwe, and his goal will not only please his fellow Warriors and Zimbabwe fans. It will pure satisfaction to the young patriotic boy who has had to endure baseless accusations from none other than his own association, ZIFA.
A few days before this crucial match, the Zimbabwe Football Association's CEO Jonathan Mashingaidze, who has developed the notoriety of shooting off his mouth in all the wrong directions of late, made sensational match-fixing accusations against Musona, Ovidy Karuru and other suspended Warriors members after the players allegedly visited the offices of former ZIFA CEO Henrietta Rushwaya who has been cleared of match-fixing allegations under unclear circumstances.
Playing under the weight and cloud of accusations, coming from a four-match winless streak and playing much of the match with one-man less and still managing to grab a goal speaks volumes of the big heart that the young Musona has. Coupled with all this, the young man is coming from a difficult season in the German Bundelsiga where he only managed two first eleven appearances and 13 substitute appearances.
At last the Warriors have managed to get the monkey off their back and they can look forward to attempting to put their World Cup 2014 campaign back on track when they travel to Egypt in March next year.
