Uganda to face African champions Zambia in World Cup qualifiers

Uganda Cranes were drawn against champions Zambia in the final qualifying round of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations Cup.

To make a first appearance at the continental event in 35 years, Bobby Williamsonís side must deny the Chipolopolo the chance of defending their crown.

The home and away clash set for the weekends of September 7-9 and October 12-14 will see Uganda host the latter.

The draw conducted at Emperorís Palace in Johannesburg, South Africa on Thursday crowned the anticipation that had built for weeks.

A 4-0 drubbing of Congo Brazzaville gave Cranes a 5-3 aggregate victory in the last round to move to within 180 minutes of the contnental event to be held in South Africa from January 19.

Prior to the draw, defender Godfrey Walusimbi saw no preference in preferring any opponent at this stage.

"Weíll play the team that we are given," the full back said yesterday. "There is no point in wanting to play this team, or that. At this stage there are no weak teams."

A home second leg is just what Doctor ordered as Uganda has not lost a home tie at Namboole since South Africa 1-0 win seven years ago.

"Playing and knocking out a big team would be ideal preparation for our participation in South Africa next year," the Bunnamwaya star remarked confidently.

"A first leg away is definitely better," he noted "In the game of football, starting at home has never been an advantage."

Zambia is currently one of the fairytale stories in world football as they lost their entire team in an air crash off the coast of Gabon in 1993.

They were travelling to Senegal for a 1994 World Cup qualifying game.

After 19 years, they returned to Gabon to win a first Nations Cup crown earlier this year, beating Ivory Coast 8-7 in an enthralling post match penalty shootout.

French coach Herve Renard, the magician of that triumph, is still at the helm.
