Wanyama's Celtic floor Aberdeen

Kenyan midfielder Victor Wanyama turned out for his 30th Scottish league match as he helped champions Celtic open their title defence with a narrow 1-0 win over Aberdeen.

Wanyama, who has been featuring in the press since English Premier League sides Manchester United and Arsenal showed interest in him, played for 90 minutes in a match won by a late strike by Kris Commons at Celtic Park on Saturday.

A howler from Dons goalkeeper Jamie Langfield 11 minutes from time allowed Commons’ tame effort to squirm through his grasp, making the difference between the sides.

The home fans had celebrated the unfurling of the championship flag before the match but the party atmosphere soon turned flat as they were left frustrated by resolute defending from the Dons.

With rivals Rangers banished to the third division after being condemned to liquidation, Celtic have been widely tipped to win this season’s league title.

However, the Hoops struggled to break down a solid Aberdeen rearguard who restricted the home side to few opportunities before a howler from ’keeper Jamie Langfield handed Celtic the lead 11 minutes from time.

Wanyama had to move sharply at the other end to stop an Aberdeen counter-attack which involved Niall McGinn and ended with the Northern Irishman racing desperately to get on to a Jack pass inside the box.

Aberdeen had a half-chance soon after the restart when Hayes’ corner from the right was punched only as far as Dons striker Scott Vernon, but from 12 yards he drove the ball high and wide.

Wanyama then saw a shot fly wide as the visitors restricted Celtic to long-range chances.

"We got a bit of luck with the goal," the Celtic manager, Neil Lennon, admitted.
