World Breaking News: Player and Coach Transfers

While the major focus has been on the first ever African 2010 World Cup preparations and the announcements of the final 23 teams by participating nations, the transfer market in world football has been equally busy. Beezsports.com chronicles the imminent, much anticipated and shock moves by coaches and soccer players, in Europe and Africa in the past few days.

Dubai

Yesterday the defending United Arab Emirates champions Al Ahli proudly announced the capture of defending World Champions Italy's winning and current captain, Fabio Cannavaro. The 2006 World Footballer of the year who holds 132 caps for his country, is reported to have parted company with Juventus at the end of last season.

"We announce that we have signed 2006 FIFA World Cup winner Fabio Cannavaro for two years", read an official statement from the UAE Club's official website.

The shock switch to the oil-rich UAE club followed Cannavaro's spurning of overtures from Serie A clubs to persuade the player to remain in Italy. Cannavaro himself appears to be relishing the prospect of winding down his career away from the limelight of world football.

"I always thought of moving to live in Dubai as I love it and I have achieved my dream by moving to Dubai and play for one of its big clubs like Al Ahli", the club's official website quotes Cannavaro at the time of the announcement.

England

Avram Grant, who resigned from Portsmouth Football club on 21 May following the club's relegation from the English Premiership, is set to be announced this Thursday as a successor to the sacked Gianfranco Zola. Contrary to some reports from some sections of the World media yesterday, Grant's appointment hasn't been officially announced yet. Grant only returned from holiday yesterday. Nonetheless, only a miracle will bar Grant from being announced as the new Hammers coach today. The deal is almost sealed and done.

The Hammers' co-Chairmen David Sullivan and David Gold have already interviewed the Israeli Grant for the vacant Hammers Head Coaching position.

"After an hour, we knew we could work with this manager. We are very optimistic. I think it's time for the football club to get some stability with people that have been there, done that and got the T-shirt," Gold is quoted by BBC Sport as having commented thus.

Grant has nothing much to prove after having done a fairly good job at Portsmouth albeit under very difficult conditions which included seeing the club going into administration for spiralling debt. Grant led the Fraton Park club to the FA Cup final which they eventually lost by a single Drogba goal on 15 May. Grant's strengths which appeared to have lured the Hammers leadership must be his experience plus ability to bring discipline and stability to the club, which is apparently what West Ham lacked under the Italian Zola, according to Gold.

Spain

The newly appointed Real Madrid Jose Mourinho, a trebble winner with Inter Milan in the just ended season, looks set to pursue his interest in Liverpool's Steven Gerrard. The Special one is an admirer of the Liverpool and England midfielder. Mourinho is reported to have already failed in his bid to lure his former pupil at Chelsea, Frank Lampard to the Bernabéu.

Meanwhile, news emanating from England has it that Liverpool have offered coach Raphael Benitez an exit package to leave Anfield immediately. The Reds management are reported to have offered the Spaniard a £3m exit package. If Benitez, who is currently on holiday accepts the offer, the he will be off the books of the Anfield club. Benitez has been linked with Juventus for most of last season. Of late he has been linked with the vacant Inter Milan post following the resignation of Mourinho. It will be interesting to see if the Reds will also allow players like Gerrard to leave Anfield as well.

South Africa

The long-serving Kaizer Chiefs midfield general Tinashe Nengomasha is rumoured to be on his way out of Naturena following interest from Qatar's Al Ahly Doha. The Zimbabwean midfield workhorse is even on record confirming the imminent departure from South Africa's glamour club to the oil-rich Qatar, which is fast becoming a destination of choice for famous footballers in the twilight of their playinhg careers.

The 27 year old Zimbabwean player who turned out for his country in the historic friendly match against Brazil on Wednesday afternoon is expected to leave for Qatar in mid June for medical tests. He is excited at the prospect of playing in the rich Qatar league

"...I'm excited about the possibility of a move, as things look promising...", the midfield dynamo is quoted as having on the official Kaizer Chiefs website.

Nengomasha is expected to be joined by two other South Africa-based players, his team mate at Chiefs Valery Nahayo and Ajax Cape Town's Diyo Sibisi who are also being pursued by Al Ahly Doha.

Zimbabwe

There were some scouts at the friendly match between Zimbabwe and Brazil on Wednesday at the National Sports Stadium. It is rumoured that some scouts were impressed by what they saw in the First Half performance by the exciting Zimbabwean youngster, Knowledge Musona. The Kaizer Chiefs young player tomented Brazil's Lucio in the opening 20 minutes of the match. Could this be the much needed break into a competitive European league by Musona? Watch this space for updates. Beezsports.com will follow this story and bring you updates.
