Gaxa moves to Belgium

Bafana Bafana midfielder Siboniso Gaxa has finally realised his dream to play his football in Europe when he signed for Belgian Jupiler league bottom side Lierse.

The KwaMashu-born soccer star has been bought by Lierse from Sundowns for a reported amount of R6 million. The versatile player, who can operate either on the right flank or in central defence has signed a three year contract with the Jupiler club.

There were media reports that Sundowns had rejected the initial offer of R4 million from Lierse about a month ago, and this did not appear to go down well with Gaxa at the time.

Lierse CEO Neel De Ceulaer has confirmed on the club's website the capture of Gaxa, who sulked in the past three weeks for what he viewed as an attempt by the Sundowns management to frustrate his intended move.

"He is a hard worker, an outstanding defender, someone who excels on the right flank. We know that we have to strengthen in defence. With Siboniso Gaxa we've definitely acquired somebody who can play at this level," de Ceulaer told the Lierse website on Monday.

Gaxa had been taken to Belgium by his agents Rob Moore and Glyn Binkin. Initially, the player was set to undergo trials at KAA Gent, before there was a sudden change of mind from Gaxa's representatives, resulting in him signing for Lierse instead.

The controversial events regarding Gaxa's trials in Belgium angered Sundowns who accused Binkin and Moore of taking Gaxa to Lierse away from Gent without their knowledge. Binkin had to send a detailed letter of apology to the Sundowns management for the manner his company had handled the transfer of Gaxa.

But after all has been said and done, Gaxa is now a happy man, and his long time dream of plying his trade in Europe has finally been realised.

The former Sundowns player is currently in camp with Bafana Bafana who are preparing for the opening fixture of their AFCON 2012 qualifiers against Niger at the Mbombela stadium in Mpumalanga on Saturday.
