Harambe stars camp ahead of Bafana tie

Harambee Stars will head into camp on Monday until their international friendly with South Africa on October 16 in Nairobi Football Kenya Federation technical committee head Elly Mukolwe has said.

"We will retain the provisional 28-man squad named earlier before the nine foreign-based professionals join camp later.

"But the one-week camp is not because of the South Africa friendly but for the African Nations Championship qualifiers," Mukolwe said. Kenya are drawn against Burundi in the preliminary round.

South African coach Gordon Igesund has meanwhile named a 27-man squad ahead of the Kenya friendly and one against Poland on October 12 in Warsaw.

As expected, Steven Pienaar announced his retirement from international football this week.

According to South African newspaper the Star, Igesund seemed to have calmly accepted the sudden retirement of the Bafana Bafana captain.

"We have to move on. I have not spoken to him but I have accepted (his
retirement). Hes far from our thoughts now," he said during a press
conference in South Africa on Tuesday.

Six Europe-based pros

The Kenyan bound squad includes six European-based professionals.

In another development, Kenya has dropped three places to 128 in the latest Fifa world rankings released on Wednesday by the global soccer body.

Spain and Germany maintained their first and second positions respectively while Portugal moved up three places to take up third spot in the world.

Central African Republic (49th, up 15) have moved up for the seventh month in a row, climbing from 131st in March 2012 to enter the top 50 for the first time ever.

Spain on top

The current edition of the Ranking sees a further nine teams reach their best-ever position:

Algeria (24th, up 4), Mali (27th, up 5), Cape Verde Islands (51st, up 14), Haiti (60th, up 17), Dominican Republic (102nd, up 1), Philippines (147th, up 3), Aruba (154th, up 4), Guam (178th, up 7) and Monserrat (181st, up 25).

European champions Spain remain top of the rankings released yesterday while Argentina moved up three places into fourth spot.

Germany were second while Portugal jumped one spot to third, as England fell two places to fifth.

Colombia, who have notched up convincing wins over Chile (3-1) and Uruguay (4-0) in World Cup qualifiers, shot up 13 places and now sit in ninth spot.
