Al Hilal in CAF Cup semis after Sadomba brace

Al Hilal in CAF Cup semis after Sadomba brace
Sudanese giants and perennial CAF Cup competitions participants Al Hilal stormed into the semi-finals of the Confederations Cup 2012 after a brace by Zimbabwean forward Edward Sadomba saw them beat fellow Sudanese club Al Ahly Shandy 2-0 in Sudan last night.

After five matches, Al Hilal have now moved to 11 points and their place in the semi-finals has been confirmed, with a match to go in two weeks time pitting themselves and their bitter Khartoum rivals El Merreikh who sit on 10 points and have an away game to bottom-placed Interclube of Angola on Sunday.

El Merreikh could go top if they beat Interclube on Sunday, but the winner of Group A will be decided in a fortnight.

Sadomba's brace takes his tally in CAF competitions to seven goals, the same number of goals he has scored in all competitions this year, following the three goals he contributed in Al Hilal's CAF Champions League failed campaign.

Sadomba is already enlisted as one of the nominees for this year's African Player of the Year for those based in Africa.

Depending on Sadomba's form between now and the end of the Confederations Cup, there is a possibility that he if he outshines other contestants, he could be lucky this time around and win the award at the GLO-CAF Awards to be held in Accra Ghana  on December 20.

Sadomba was shortlisted among the top ten players but he did not manage to win the award.

The Zimbabwean striker is currently on cloud nine after learning that his name was cleared of any match-fixing suspicions and allegations leveled at a number of Zimbabwean players for the fateful trips organised by the now suspended former ZIFA CEO Henrietta Rushwaya.

It was a n open secret all along that most of these players implicated were victims of poor management by the former Zifa board which was replaced by the current board. The board allowed its officers to go on trips which were not sanctioned by authorities, thereby exposing players to the underworld of match-fixing and betting syndicates.

Sadomba is innocent, among many other stars such as Kingston Nkhatha, Cuthbert Malajila,  Lincoln Zvasiya, Energy Murambadoro and Ephraim Mazarura who have all since been drafted into the Warriors squad to face Angola next Sunday in Luanda.
