Kenya restored thier Cecafa hopes

Harambee Stars restored hopes of playing in this year’s Cecafa Tusker Senior Challenge Cup quarter-finals after they beat South Sudan 2–0 in a Group A match at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Kampala on Tuesday.

South Sudan looked a more polished and improved side than the team that lost 1–0 to Ethiopia on Saturday.

David Ochieng’ struck in the 14th minute via a brilliant header off a Kevin Omondi corner kick before substitute Clifton Miheso scored the second in 68th minute with a powerful ground shot that left South Sudan goalkeeper Juma Janeiro on the ground.

Stars should have taken the lead in as early as the seventh minute when Kevin Omondi unleashed a ground shot that went a few inches off target. Michael Baraza missed several chances in the first half that should have extended Kenya’s lead.

But Paul Were was the villain of the day, with at least three missed chances. The striker beat the South Sudanese offside trap in the 23rd minute but shot over the bar with South Sudan goalkeeper Juma Janero already beaten.

The half time score was 1–0 in favour of Kenya.

Upon resumption, laxity in the Kenyan defence resulted in South Sudan pinning Harambee Stars in their half for the first 15 minutes before settling down to regain control of the game.

Abdalla Juma Baya should have put Kenya ahead in the 60th minute but his well calculated shot was punched for a fruitless corner kick.

South Sudan’s best chance was in the 21st minute when Leon Khamis missed a tap in. In the 31st minute, Khamis was back on the Kenyan goal mouth and this time his well taken shot went over the bar.

Kenya now have three points.
