SA, Cape Verde in AFCON 2013 opener draw

South Africa's Bafana Bafana are lucky to have come out of their Africa Cup of Nations 2013 opening match with a point, after surviving three clear cut chances that Cape Verde missed at the National Stadium on Saturday.

Both teams struggled to string decent passes together and give the fans an exciting opening match. Cape Verde had a clear strategy, to frustrate their opponents and hit them on counter attack, which is exactly what they did, but failed to make use of chances which came their way.

After 15 minutes of play, Luis Platini broke free, went past captain Bongani Khumalo, but astonishingly tried to place his shot on the far right and missing in the process.

Mendes was to miss yet another chance in the box when his shot in the box went sky high.

Bafana Bafana had too many stray passes, and the two strikers upfront, Lehlohonolo Majoro and Bernard Parker lacked clean supplies, and Katlego Mphela was to suffer the same fate when he replaced Majoro in the second half.

The introduction of Lerato Chabangu and Thulani Serero appeared to be oncourse to change something for the host nation, but still no good chances were created to goals to come by.

Cape Verde were happy to continue to frustrate Bafana, and at the end of 90 minutes, they had achieved their goal, a draw, but the hosts left the National Stadium dejected, and hope for a better performance against Angola in Durban in their next match.
