Rich pickings for Zimbos in Europe

In-form striker Quincy Antipas of Brondby in Denmark

Zimbabwean soccer players based in Europe had particularly a goals-filled last weekend as they battled to improve their respective teams' log standings as the season in most European leagues comes to an end in a few weeks' time in May.

England-based midfielder Bradley Pritchard scored an early goal for a second time this month when he helped his club Charlton Athletics to an impressive 2-2 draw away at Middlesbrough on Saturday. This time Pritchard scored only after 32 seconds of play. On the 13th April the Zimbabwean star midfielder had scored the first goal in the 4th minute in a 6-0 destruction of Barnsley.

In Denmark, Quincy Antipas scored for a second week running, as he helped Danish giants Brondby to remain just a run above relegation zone. Antipas' 87th minute strike ws the winning goal as Brondby beat OB 2-1 away from home.

Last week Antipas, a former CAPS United and Motor Action player back at home, had scored a 74th minute equaliser to help Brondby to a 2-2 home daw against Silkeborg who are also battling relegation. The Zimbabwean attacker has now taken his goal tally to seven in the league this season.

In Romania, big former CAPS striker Mike Temwanjira remembered how to score goals following a long injury lay-off, when he rose from the bench to net a goal just five minutes after coming on in a match against Astra Giurgiu in the Romanian topflight Liga. The 30-year old Zimbabwean striker scored in the 81st minute to give  FC Vaslui a 2-1 victory over their fellow Liga side.

In Poland's Ekstraklasa (topflight) league Costa Nhamoinesu's Zaglebie Lubin gave a good response to their defeat to Lech Poznan a week earlier by posting an impressive 4-0 home victory over Śląsk Wrocław on Sunday. Nhamoinesu has been a regular defender for Lubin in the past three seasons and has been in imperious form.

Elsewhere Edward Sadomba scored in his new United Arab Emirates club Al Ittihad Kalba's 2-2 home draw against Al Wasl, but Kalba remains bottom of the rich UAE league. The former Dynamos and Al Hilal hitman, who is now correctly used as an attacking midfielder, scored in the 50th minute.

Sadomba's countryman at Al Shaab Noel Kaseke enjoyed a rare 1-0 win over champions and log leaders Al Ain for whom start Ghanaian striker Asamoah Gyan was nowhere in sight on the team's line-up, possibly due to injury. Kaseke played in defence through out the match.

In South Africa, it was great to see young Zimbabwean forward Matthew Rusike returning to action for Kaizer Chiefs after an injury lay-off in the title chasing glamour boys' 0-0 draw against another title chasing side Platinum Stars on Sunday. Rusike was a second half substitute.

Kingston Nkhatha who has thus far weighed in with seven league goals played the entire 90 minutes for Chiefs, while Willard Katsande was his usual industrious self, playing the destroyer im midfield for Chiefs. The player they call 'Salt n Vinegar' has carved some good reputation at Chiefs this season as he has been one of the club's outstanding players in their fight for the championship in the ABSA premiership.

Lincoln Zvasiya a telented up and coming central defender who was named man-of-the match the last time he featured for Chiefs, continued to kick his heels on the bench. It must be a hard time for the boy to come into the team and give such a great performance as he did against Bloemfontein Celtic in a 1-0 victory and then sit on the bench the next match.

Zvasiya must take heart. He is a good player and he is unfortunate to be in a team with established international defenders like Morgan Gould, Tefu Mashamaite and Mulomowandawu Mathoho. Even the right back position which the young Zimbabwean can potentially take is taken by another Bafana Bafana player Siboniso Gaxa. The good thing is that Zvasiya demonstrated enough hunger, and a very clear message that he really deserves a chance in Stuart Baxter's starting eleven.

Cuthbert Malajila who is chasing a top goal scorer failed to get on the scoresheet despite numerous attempts as he sadly saw his side lose 0-1 at home to Moroka Swallows. Malajila has had an outstanding season in South Africa and sits on 10 goals, now the third highest.

Just two weeks ago Malajila was joint leading scorer with his competitors Bernard Parker of Chiefs and Swallows' Katlego Mashego, who have since increased their tallies to 12 and 11 respectively, leaving the former Dynamos star in  third place.

Khama Billiat and Brian Abbas Amidu are still fighting against relegation at Ajax Cape Town and Black Leopards, and their respective draw and a loss over the weekend did not help matters for either club.

Billiat was taken off in the second half in Ajax's 1-1 derby match against another relegation Chippa side, for whom former Manchester City star Benjamin 'Benjani' Mwaruwari featured.

Simba Sithole has returned from injury and played for a few minutes in Supersport's 1-0 away victory at Golden Arrows.

Talented and young former Dynamos striker Roderick Mutuma is yet to make the impact hugely expected of him by his club coach Clint Larsen at Bloemfontein Celtics, and only came on in the second half in the club's impressive 1-0 away victory at struggling Mamelodi Sundowns, for whom Nyasha Mushekwi was taken off early in the second half, while Method Mwanjali sat on the bench. Nyandoro was out through suspension.
