Houllier is rumoured to have accepted a two year deal to coach Villa this season

News circulating in France is that former Liverpool and Lyon coach Gerard Houllier has accepted the offer to become Aston Villa's coach following the resignation of Martin O'Neill from the post on the eve of the beginning of the Barclays English Premier Soccer League's 2010/2011 season.

English newspapers have also been running stories about the latest developments regarding the imminent appointment of Houllier at Villa.

Other coaches who have been in the running for the post are Villa caretaker boss Kevin MacDonald and former Charlton and West Ham boss Alan Curbishley, who were both interviewed for the post last week, alongside Houllier.

The BBC Sport has also speculated about an imminent announcement by Villa on Wednesday following recent interviews with the Villa bosses.

The 63-year old Frenchman is reported by the French Sport daily L'Equipe to have accepted a two year deal to coach Villa.

Houllier has not coached a soccer club since quitting Lyon in the French Ligue 1 in 2007. He is currently employed by the French Football Federation as the National Techinical Director, with a brief to oversee the development and implementation of football policy in the country.

"According to our information, Gerard Houllier has given his agreement to join the English club Aston Villa," read part of the report on the L'Equipe website.

"The current DTN (National Technical Director) was in England last weekend and he left on Monday evening.

"Negotiations between the two parties on Tuesday reached a conclusion over a contract with a duration of two years."

Houllier, according to the same report, is believed to be eager on getting on board his former assistant  Phil Thompson once he resumes his official duties at Villa.

Thompson, a former Liverpool defender, is remembered for standing in for Houllier at Liverpool with distinction during the heart problems the Frenchman suffered while in charge at Anfield.

Villa is expected to announce the capture of the experienced former France coach Houllier on Wednesday or Thursday.
