Strike force worries Cranes coach

Uganda Cranes head coach Micho expressed his dissatisfaction following the poor performance of his striking line even on training a scenario he says might cost the team.

"My strikers…my strikers…even in training you are not scoring…," screeched Milutin Micho Sredojevic as his strikers laboured to find the net.

Robert Ssentongo, Hamis Kiiza and Emmanuel Okwi positioned but fired blanks in Monday’s training, Geoffrey Massa missed a header before hitting the woodwork, and Daniel Sserunkuma somehow beat Abel Dhaira to his right with a low drive.

Micho and his assistants are working extra-hard ahead of Angola on Saturday to improve on the defensive positioning, ensure cohesion in the midfield, but most importantly, get the strikers firing.
Uganda have scored only three goals in four World Cup qualifying games with Okwi the only striker on the score sheet.

Godfrey Walusimbi, from a penalty spot, and Tonny Mawejje are the others.

But Micho denies there are elements of frustration, insisting his strikers will finally get it together, but that they must work harder to upgrade to the level that is the World Cup; that is Africa Cup.

"We are having them do things from basics," he said, "First with no opponents, then few opponents, meaning we are going through all the methodologies of education from easy to complicate.

"You are wondering why we are not scoring. No doubt, we have very good players but they have to know playing in Uganda, playing in Cecafa is different from international stage.

"At the World Cup stage, Africa stage, you attack the ball in limited time, in limited space, and put away chances because the next one may not come. That is what we are trying to do. And I believe in our players."

But Micho has even more worries. Dennis Onyango, due to return after serving a suspension against Liberia, picked up a knee injury yesterday while Okwi, apart from struggling for his first goal since against Tanzania in the 2012 Cecafa, suffered a thigh injury on Monday.

Optimistic
However, the Etoile du Sahel striker is hoping to shake off the injury and admits they have to do a lot before Angola. "I believe it’s something we should work on as strikers," said the man who scored in the 1-1 away draw with Angola.

"But we are human and every person has seen his mistakes and within these remaining few days we have to do our best and make sure by Saturday we are fresh and ready for the game. "We have good chances against Angola mostly that we are home but we shouldn’t relax because Angola is a good team."
