Zimbos' nightmarish weekend in foreign leagues

Most Zimbabwean players playing in foreign leagues found it particularly tough during this past weekend, with most players on the receiving end, with the exception of a few whose clubs celebrated wins. Some players enjoyed some great midweek results though.

South Africa

In the ABSA premiership league, the only player who scored a goal this weekend is the much maligned Kingston Nkhatha, who, against all the senseless booing he endured at the hands of his own club supporters, scored a 41st minute equaliser for Kaizer Chiefs in a league SOWETO derby with the on-fire Orlando Pirates at the Soccer City (FNB) Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Kermit Erasmus had given the Buccaneers an early lead after dominating the early exchanges. Knowledge Musona failed to recover on time from a shoulder injury sustained when he scored an equaliser for Amakhosi during a Telkom Knock-out victory over Free State Stars last weekend. Willard Katsande as usual played the entire match for Chiefs.

During midweek, Mamelodi Sundowns' Zim stars Cuthbert Malajila and Khama Billiat enjoyed a 7-1 humiliation of Amazulu, who are captained by Tapuwa Kapini and had Carlington Nyadombo in the heart of defence.

Sundowns went on to suffer a surprise 0-1 defeat to Polokwane City on Saturday night. Still on Saturday night, Pretoria University (AmaTuks) drew 0-0 with visiting Ajax Cape Town, and Warriors keeper Washington Arubi kept a clean sheet, while Obadiah Tarumbwa was an unused substitute.

On Sunday it was another bad day in office for Kapini and Nyadombo as Amazulu suffered a 0-2 home defeat to Maritzburg in a KZN derby at Moses Mabhida Stadium. Onismor Bhasera played a full 90 minutes as Bidvest Wits beat Free State Stars 2-0 away from home. Benjamin Mwaruwari and Tinashe Nengomasha were only introduced in the second half. There was no sign of the talented Denver Mukamba on the Wits bench. Very surprising considering the form he showed the few times he has played under Gavin Hunt at Wits. Still on Sunday, Roderick Mutuma was back in the starting eleven for Bloemfontein Celtic under new coach Ernest Middendorp as they forced an impressive 1-1 draw against log leaders Supersport United in Pretoria.

Belgium

Nyasha Mushekwi was back in the starting eleven as KV Oostende registered a rare win against Lierse in the Pro-League on Saturday. Milkshake was taken off towards the end of the match as his club won 2-0 away from home to move into safety. Vusa Nyoni's woes at Mons' continued as his club lost 0-1 to Kortrijk at home to remain bottom of the league. Nyoni was an unused substitute. There was no sign of Ovidy Karuru on the OH Leuven team sheet as they lost 4-2 away at Mechelen on Saturday.

Czech Republic

In-form Costa Nhamoinesu's log-leading club Sparta Praha were inactive this weekend and will be in action on Monday, but with a game in hand, they lead second placed Teplice by five (5) points after 11 games in the Czech Liga (topflight) division. Nhamoinesu is playing the game of his life in the Czech Republic, and many will be surprised if he does not receive a call-up when the Zimbabwe senior national team is active again. He remains probably the best performing defensive player  at the moment.

Denmark

Veteran Forward Quincy Antipas surprisingly started the match from the bench as Danish gaints Bondby played a 0-0 draw away at OB, their second successive goalless draw after drawing 0-0 with Viborg last Sunday. They had also drawn a match before that, holding former champions Nordsjślland 1-1 at home. Brondy are placed just above relegation zone with 15 points from 13 matches, and they have made a good recovery after starting the season poorly. Quincy entered the field of play in the 63rd minute.

England

Bradley Pritchard has really cemented first eleven midfield place at Charlton Athletics as he played for the entire 90 minutes in a 0-0 draw against former premiership side Wigan Athletics at home. Pritchard has enjoyed great form in England's second tier, the Championship, and has been in irresistible form for Powell's team ever since they were campaigning in League One three seasons ago.

Greece

Lincoln Zvasiya was left on the bench as OFI Crete were hammered 5-1 by log leaders Olympiakos Piraeus on Sunday.

Romania

Mike Temwanjira remains FC Vaslui's trusted gunslinger, and he played a crucial role as Vaslui beat fellow strugglers Universitatia Cluj 2-0 at home. The role Temwanjira for Vaslui has less to do with him finding the goals, but with him creating scoring opportunities for other strikers, and Liviu Antal has often benefited from Mbozha (Temwanjira)'s clever runs into the box.

Sweden

There was no sign of Archieford Gutu as Kalmar beat Helsingborg 3-2 away from home. It is not clear if Gutu has been frozen out of the first team in the same manner Karuru has been frozen out at OH Leuven.
