Dynamos snatch title from under Harare City noses!

Dynamos snatch title from under Harare City noses!

Dynamos, Harare City and CAPS United provided all the drama on the final day of the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League, as the reigning champions, trailing City with 2 points going into the final week of the season, pipped Sunshine Boys to the title despite three teams, Dembare, City and Highlanders finishing all on 54 points.

City, with 53 points after the penultimate week of the season, needed an outright victory against Makepekepe to avoid being upstaged by virtue of an inferior goal difference in case of a points tie. Well, Bigboy Mawiwi’s boys could only manage a 2-2 draw against CAPS, while Dynamos managed a 2-0 drubbing of now relegated Black Mambas, while Bosso beat Shabanie Mine 3-1.

With Dynamos finishing the campaign on 54 points and a healthy goal difference of 21 goals compared to Bosso and City’s 18 and 16 respectively meant that Dynamos made history on many fronts. Firstly, Dembare became the only team to win 20 titles in Zimbabwe. The Harare giants became the only team in the country to win the title on three consecutive times, and coach Calisto Pasuwa scored a first in the same vein, having won title for each season he has been at Dembare’s helm.

For City, the title was theirs to lose after such a scintillating 4-0 win over Highlanders at Rufaro Stadium during week 29 of the season. On a black City Sunday, Mawiwi’s boys failed their litmus test in the elite league, and of all teams in the PSL, it was CAPS who did their arch-rivals Dynamos a favour through fair play and denying the City boys their maiden title only on their second attempt.

City missed key attacking midfielder Songani and utility player Crispen Dickson, the architects of their 4-0 victory over Highlanders last week. It was a matter of being so close yet so far from their first star in the Castle PSL.

Spare a special thought for success-starved Highlanders. The Bulawayo giants, who have won the title on four previous occasions, finished tied on 54 points with Dynamos, now twice in succession, following their pain last season when they were edged out by their fiercest rivals on goal-difference-again.

For the umpteenth time, it is the Boys in Blue who will represent Zimbabwe in the CAF Champions League next year, and could be joined by Harare City, if Zimbabwe still has the second spot in the continental competition.

Congratulations Dynamos! Tough luck to Harare City who illuminated this season with consistent performances. The nation is expecting Highlanders to take their place as one of the best teams in the country, and it is surely an embarrassment to all Castle PSL teams to have Dynamos dominate football in the past 10 years.
