Ronaldo - World"s Best Player in 2014
As widely expected, Portugal national team captain and Real Madrid talisman Cristiano Ronaldo bagged his third overall title when he was crowned the FIFA Balloon d'Or title winner on Monday night in Zurich, Switzerland, at a glamorous ceremony.

Messi beat his closest rival Lionel Messi, Argentina captain and Barcelona super star and the Germany and Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

Ronaldo averaged a total of about 37% votes, while Messi was at distant second with about 15.76% of all votes cast, and closely followed by Neuer at 15.72%.

This is Ronaldo's second award in a row, having won the same award in 2013. His first award was in 2008. He still trails Messi who sits at a world record of four titles.

The Portuguese star had a 2014 to remember, having scored about 61 goals in 60 games for both club and country. His goal scoring record of 17 goals in the Champions League helped Real to win their 10th UEFA Champions League title, in addition to the La Liga title for the 2013/2014 season.

Ronaldo becomes only the fifth player in history to win the award three times after the likes of Johan Cruyff, Kevin Keegan, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Michel Platini (the current UEFA President), Marco van Basten and Messi.

In accepting his award, the Real Madrid star, who was also named UEFA'S Best Player for the 2013/2014 season, had a mouthful to say.

"I want to thank my mother, my family. I would like to thank all those who voted for me, my coach, my fellow players, the president of the club," Ronaldo commented while collecting the award.

"It has been an unforgettable year. To win this trophy, a trophy of this kind, is something unique, and like I say, I want to continue working as I have so far, trying to go on and win more titles both individually and as a team, for my mother, for my father who is up there looking at me, my son, and to become better.

"I would like to say to the Portuguese: I never thought I would win this trophy on three separate occasions. Of course it is something that is always with me - I want to become one of the greatest players of all time and I hope to get there. I want to thank you all," said Ronaldo.
