Zim U'23 minus 8 star players for All-Africa games

[Posted 30 Aug 2015]
[By Brighton Mupangavanhu]
Djugardens" Tino Kadewere will not be available for "Zim U"23 team for All Africa games 2015

The promise shown by Zimbabwe Under 23 players during their All-Africa games and the 2016 Olympics qualifiers has resulted in European and South African clubs signing off the players, implying that those players cannot feature for the team at the All-Africa finals in Congo Brazzaville in September.

Success which saw the team qualifying for the All Africa games as well as almost qualifying for the Olympics means Zimbabwe became victims of their own success, as far as participation at the All Africa games is concerned.

The Young Warriors will not be able to call upon 6 players who regularly played during the qualifiers. Star midfielders Walter Musona and captain of the U'23 team Wisdom Mutasa recently joined Slovakian Superliga club FK Senica from FC Platinum.

Tino Kadewere of Harare City is now with Djugardens in Sweden's Allsvasken on loan till the end of the Swedish season in November. Defender and former U'23 captain  Ronald Pfumbidzai is now on the books of Danish club Hobro, having left CAPS United just before the final two matches against South Africa in the Olympics qualifiers.

Key Young Warriors striker Thomas Chideu was bought by Ajax Cape Town from Highlanders. Central defender Liberty Chakoroma left Buffaloes for Free State Stars in the South African ABSA premiership.

In addition, Zimbabwe will find it impossible to call up some of their Europe-based Under 23 players to feature for the team in Congo Brazzaville due to the fact that the All Africa games do not fall on FIFA Calendar dates.

From England, Zimbabwe could have called Colchester first choice striker 19-year old Macauley Bonne. There is also another 19 year old player in Denmark, Tanaka Chinyahara  who has broken into Hobro's first team.

In South Africa there is 22-year old Charlton Mashumba who scored 19 goals to help Jomo Cosmos win promotion back into the ABSA premiership. The player has never been called into the U'23 squad and that is very surprising.

All these players will unfortunately not be able to feature for Zimbabwe at the All Africa games finals this year.

However, Zimbabwe has depth and the absence of these players were not going to be felt if ZIFA had resources or were better organised to allow the coaches to conduct meaningful training camps for the U'23 team.
