Charlton Mashumba: Striker to watch in the ABSA PSL this season!

[Posted 26 Nov 2015]

Charlton Mashumba of Jomo Cosmos
The South African ABSA Premier Soccer League is just four games away from the half way mark, and has seen the emergence of some exciting talent. Among the talents that have illuminated the PSL thus far include Ajax Cape Town's Prince Nxumalo and the outrageous talent of 18-year-old Phakamani Mahlambi of Bidvest Wits. Yet, Jomo Cosmos' Charlton Mashumba has been raising his hand slowly but surely and is now demanding to be noticed.

On Sunday afternoon, Mashumba was first on the scoresheet to lead Ezenkosi to a narrow but exciting 4-3 win over visiting Chippa United at the Olen Park Stadium. The 22-year old Zimbabwean striker was more dangerous in his off the ball movements than when he had the ball on his feet. He was duly rewarded by being named Man-of-the-Match.

Mashumba's goal on Sunday was his third overall thus far this season in the league. He was the first Cosmos player to score a goal for the team after about five games in which Ephraim "Jomo" Sono's side failed to find the target. The young striker was the highest goal scorer in the National First Division last season, with his 19 league goals helping Cosmos to fight their way back into South African topflight football.

While it is clear and evident that a player like young Mahlambi of Wits is a great prospect and one of the finds of the season, spotlight is likely to fall on Mashumba. Mahlambi is at a better resourced Wits team which has great suppliers and he needs to do less than what Mashumba has to do, making the Cosmos hitman a man to watch. It is expected that the Harare-born striker will prove his pedigree in the topflight as he did in the NFD. At three goals thus far, Mashumba is only three goals away from the pace-setters, veteran Collins Mbesuma of Black Aces and Andrea Fileccia of Free State Stars.

Mark my words: Come the end of the season, Charlton Mashumba will either be the top-goal scorer or he will appear among the top three strikers in the ABSA premiership.

It is very surprising that Zimbabwe national soccer team coach Calisto Pasuwa has not even attempted to call the striker for the Warriors AFCON. It is expected that by the time the Warriors will play in back-to-back AFCON qualifiers against Swaziland, Mashumba would have raised his hand for selection.

Mashumba has everything you need in a modern striker. As a hugely ahtletic player, he is pacy, he is great off-the-ball movements, combines well with team mates as a great team-player, has good ball-passing skills and can find his way past defenders.
