Katsande signs for Ajax

Willard Katsande has signed for Ajax Cape Town from Gunner FC of Zimbabwe

Former Gunners central midfielder Willard Katsande surprisingly surfaced in Cape Town and signed for Ajax Cape Town  last week.

Ajax Cape Town Football Club announced last Friday the capture of the Warriors trialist Katsande. The central midfielder moved to Cape Town from Gunners Football club in his homeland Zimbabwe.

According to Cape Town sources, Katsande signed a 3-year deal with the Urban Warriors, and former Ajax midfielder Edzai Kasinauyo was present at the unveiling of Katsande.

"Ajax Cape Town is proud to announce the signing of Willard Katsande", read the statement on the Cape Town club's website.

"Katsande is eager to finalize his registration and represent Ajax Cape Town", continued the statement.

The player is excited about joining the Urban Warriors and is eager to impress the local fans.

I cant wait to play for my new club. I am eager to pull on the Red and White jersey of Ajax to show local fans that I can be an asset to the club, Katsande told the Ajax website.

At Ajax, Katsande joins fellow Zimbabweans Khama Billiart and Tafadzwa Rusike, both former CAPS United players. A third player, Archieford Gutu is reported to have left Ajax and headed back home after complications with his registration.

The midfield work-horse Katsande, played for local lower division clubs in Zimbabwe such as Frontier Steel (2002-2005), Feruka (2006-2007) and a popular giant killing Mutare club Highway (2007-2009) from where he was recruited to Gunners FC.

At Gunners, Katsande made a huge contribution to the club's campaign in the Champions League qualifiers. He was in irressistible form as Gunners shocked African giants Al Ahly 1-0 at Rufaro Stadium in the Champions League second round match before eventually bowing out on 2-1 aggregate, after losing the reverse encounter 2-0 in Cairo.

Ajax were impressed by the player's showing in a friendly match against Golden Arrows a few days before he was signed.

Before that, Ajax had tracked Katsande's developments back home in Zimbabwe where he was an important member of Norman Mapeza's Warriors team that qualified for the Championship of Nations (CHAN) finals to be held in Sudan in January 2011.

The CHAN competition is only open to African soccer players playing in their countries' domestic leagues.

Ajax have been struggling to find the suitable midfielder to fulfill the midfield hard-man role, and in Katsande they seem to have found the right man for the job. Katsande can also play as an attacking midfielder.
