CAF slams 'fictitious' nominees list

CAF slams "fictitious" nominees list

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has distanced itself from a list of nominees for the 2010 African Footballer of the year awards published by some sections of the media earlier this week.

Earlier this week, a good number of newspapers in Africa and Europe released a list of nominees for the coveted individual award in African football. Players such as Michael Essien, Federick Kanoute, Emanuel Adebayor, among others, found themselves on the list despite their below par performances for either clubs or countries.

Essien for example, spent much of last season on the sidelines after knee injuries while on duty with Ghana. He did not feature much for his club Chelsea in England, and was also missing in action for Ghana at the 2010 African Cup of of Nations and the World Cup in South Africa in June.

The presence of many former winners of the African Footballer of the year award on the list which CAF now calls a 'fake' one, had begun to raise eyebrows among some African soccer analysts.

CAF, in a statement released yetsreday, has now clarified that the list did not emanate from its offices or its sponsors for the award.

"The attention of the Confederation of African Football has been drawn to a fictitious list purporting to be that of nominees for the 2010 Glo-CAF Player of the Year awards.

"CAF wishes to state clearly that the list did not emanate from its offices as there are known procedures for the listing of nominees for the awards. In the last five years, CAF and Globacom Limited, sponsors of the award ceremony have consistently announced the list through scheduled media events and the same procedure will be followed for the 2010 awards nominees.

"In addition, such a list if authored by CAF and Globacom will be posted on the official websites of the two organizations and this has not been the case in respect of the list making the rounds. We therefore urge the general public and the football community to disregard the said list circulating in some media," read the CAF statement.

There were some interesting names of candidates who could find themselves on the official list once CAF publishes it on its website and that of Globacom. Didier Drogba won the Golden boot award in England and was in great form for Chelsea last season. He will be a strong contender for the award.

Samuel Eto'o won the Champions League with Inter Milan under Jose Mourinho last season. He could make the list of nominees, but its difficult to conclude he could go all the way to lifting the award. He was not his usual best in his first season in the Serie A.

Steven Piennaar of South Africa and Everton was clearly Everton's best player last season, and has also started the new season like a house on fire. He is expected to make the CAF list of nominees, and could become the only candidate from Southern Africa.
