Official CAF Footballer shortlist yet to come

Drogba is the reigning CAF Footballer of the year and might retain the title in 2010

The Confederation of African Football's  GLO/CAF African Footballer of the year shortlist has not yet been officially publicised, a CAF statement has revealed.

CAF Secretary General, Hicham El Amrani  has confirmed that the continental mother body, together with the award's sponsors Globacom Limited, will only publish the official list in the first week of November.

"Any other list making rounds is not from us.

"We are going according to procedure. We are taking into account all tournaments of 2010 from club to national team levels including the Nations Cup in Angola and the World Cup in South Africa," Amrani told this week.

Amrani conceded however, that "a draft comprehensive list of players" nominated for the Player of the year among African players outside the continent and those plying their trade on the continent have been submitted to the relevant committees for shortlisting.

The relevant committees include the CAF Technical and Development Committee and Media Committee, and they are expected to give their comments before short-listing is finalised.

According to CAF, 10 players from among Africa's foreign legion of stars dotted around the world will be selected. Among those playing at home in Africa, only 5 players will be shortlisted.

There is nothing on the CAF website to give guidance on the criteria to be followed this year. It does appear however that after the final shortlisting, national coaches from the CAF member states will vote for the footballer of the year.

It is rumoured that the comprehensive list which the CAF Secretary General referred to above, has already been leaked to the media.

It has been reported in some sections of the media across the continent, that  a comprehensive list of 30 players has been submitted to the committees which have been tasked with whittling down the list to about 15 players.

Some surprise names from Nigeria, where the sponsors GLO hail from, are to be found on the expanded list of 30. Dickson Etuhu, Kalu Uche and Osaze Odemwinge are rumoured to have made the bigger list. Odemwinge was player of the month for September in England.

Perennial campaigners and potential winners, Cameroonian Samuel Eto'o, currently on fire for Inter Milan in Italy and Ivory Coast's Didier Drogba are also on the list.

Of those who had made it their habit to find their names on the CAF short-lists in the past years, only Essien of Ghana and Chelsea is not on the list of 30 leaked to the media.

Steven Piennar of South Africa is surely not a surprise inclusion on the list. The Bafana talisman was in great form for Everton in the Barclays English Premier Soccer League last season.

The 2009 winner, Chelsea's Drogba, is expected to retain the award during the 2010 Award ceremony. The Ivory Coast captain won the Golden Boot award in England for his outstanding goal-scoring prowess in the 2009/2010 season.
