Zim Big 3 in weekend wins

[Posted 25 Oct 2010]

Dynamos, CAPS and Highlanders won their fixtures over the weekend

The traditional Big Three of Zimbabwean club football, CAPS United, Dynamos and Highlanders all recorded wins over the weekend to boost their chances of challenging for the Premier Soccer League title come end of the year.

At Rufaro Stadium on Sunday, Dynamos continued their march towards the title by reducing the gap between themselves and log leaders Motor Action to only 6 points with three matches in hand, when they beat Shooting Stars 2-0 to heap more relegation worries on their opponents.

Former Moroka Swallows and Jomo Cosmos striker Evans Gwekwerere scored in the 30th and 79th minutes to give second placed DeMbare all the three points on offer and take the Glamour Boys's tally to 43 points on the log.

The Dynamos striker had not scored for Dynamos in a long time, and the coaching department hopes that the two goals have brought back Maromo's scoring touch, to give his team a strong challenge on the Mighty Bulls' stranglehold onto pole position.

“He (Gwekwerere) has not scored for the team in a long time now and those two goals will boost his confidence and we are expecting more goals from him,” Dynamos assistant coach Tichaona Diya said after the match.

Earlier on Saturday, CAPS made a sweet recovery from a 1-0 slump against Highlanders in Bulawayo last week, to post a good 2-0 victory against visiting Shabanie Mine FC at Rufaro Stadium.

Toast of the day for Makepekepe was their goalkeeper, Edmore Sibanda, who has made it a habit to score crucial goals for the team. By any standards, Sibanda is turning out to be the best goalkeeper in the history of the PSL by scoring 4 times already, all from free-kicks.

Sibanda scored a spectacular free-kick in the 71st minute to give CAPS a 2-0 lead, after Marvel Samaneka had put CAPS 1-0 up in the 49th minute.

CAPS now sit on 35 points after 21 matches and have now climbed up to 4th place. They still lie 14 points adrift of pace setters Motor Action, though. It is difficult to speak of CAPS as a real threat to Motor Action and Dynamos in the Championship. Nonetheless, it is premature to label the title a two-horse race.

Mkhupali Masuku won his fourth match in a row when he led Highlanders to a crucial 1-0 victory away at Lengthens on Saturday. This has taken Highlanders' tally to 34 points after 21 matches, and has lifted Bosso to 6th position on the log.

Monomotapa continue to make revival headlines under Taurai Mangwiro. They defeated Black Mambas 1-0 in Harare on Sunday. Mambas are going through a chequered revival of their own under Madinda Ndlovu. Monoz are now sitting 3rd on the log after 22 games.
