Mushekwi takes Sundowns to last 8

Mushekwi is showing great form for Mamelodi Sundowns

Nyasha Mushekwi continued with his good showing in the colours of Mamelodi Sundowns in South Africa, and on Saturday night, he added to his two premiership goals by scoring his club's winner against over Platinum Stars in a last round of 16 Telkom Knockout match at the Moruleng Stadium.

The big Zimbabwean striker, who was signed from CAPS United during the winter season's break, scored the only goal of the match in the 80th minute.

Mushekwi's goal was a piece of sublime individual brilliance. He picked up a loose ball outside the 18 yard box, weaved his way past bemused three Stars defenders before firing an unstoppable shot past Siyabonga Mpontshane in goals for the home team.

Sundowns had dominated much of the game, except for sporadic moments when Stars midfield took advantage of the absence of Esrom Nyandoro to give Downs a torrid time in the middle of the park.

The Pretoria side thought that they had scored a goal in the 21st minute when predatory stiker Mushekwi majestically headed in Matthew Pattison's free-kick. The linesman spoiled a good effort by wrongly ruling that Mushekwi was in an off-side position.

Meanwhile, defending Telkom Knockout Champions Kaizer Chiefs beat Amazulu into submission at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday night.

Striker Knowledge Musona tormented the home team's defence through out the match, especially in the first half where he struck the woodwork twice. The young striker shook his head in disbelief each time the woodwork denied him and Chiefs an opener they so much deserved.

Chiefs got their opener when the much maligned Kaizer Motaung's moment of brilliance from a midfield position, created an opportunity for Abia Nale to score the opener in the 41st minute.

Musona's genius and probing finally paid off when, after receiving a clean pass from Mthokozisi Yende, he beat his marker all systems out before laying an easy ball for Reneilwe Letsholonyane to stab home in the 43rd minute and give Chiefs a 2-0 lead.

The match ended 2-0, with Chiefs playing all their four Zimbabwean players in the starting line-up in a rare sight this season. Tinashe Nengomasha, Thomas Sweswe and Zhaimu Jambo all joined Musona in Chiefs' starting 11 and played for the full 90 minutes.
