Mushekwi, Musona shine as Downs and Chiefs top PSL Log

Orlando Pirates beat Ajax Cape Town

Nyasha Mushekwi is proving his value and reputation as a top quality striker and a trusted gun man at Mamemodi Sundowns when he helped his team stay top of the South African PSL, while Knowledge Musona ensured Kaizer Chiefs put pressure at the top with a win over Supersport United.

Sundowns managed an important away win at  PSL rookies Vasco da Gama in Cape Town on Friday, thanks to a fine finish from former CAPS United and Zimbabwean international striker Mushekwi. The well-built striker connected excellently a Matthew Pattison cross from the left in the first half.

The Brazillians, as Sundowns are affectionately known, stay top of the PSL with 15 points.

Amakhosi are breathing heavily under Sundowns' nose and trail the log leaders with only a single point, sitting on 14 points, following a 2-0 victory over defending champions Supersport in Pretoria on Sunday.

The "Smiling Assasin" Musona intelligently beat an ill-planned off-side trap from Supersport defenders to slot a low shot beyond England-born keeper Wayne Brown in the 41st minute to give Chiefs the lead .

Chiefs new signing Siyabulela Songwiqi added a second goal six minutes from time to give Chiefs a 2-0 victory, despite Amakhosi having been reduced to ten men following the sending off of Kaizer Motaung Junior for shoving off keeper Brown after an off-the ball incident.

In the other PSL matches played over the weekend, Orlando Pirates shrugged off the tame challenge of Ajax CapeTown, who were unbeaten until Saturday.

The Buccaneers responded maginificently to a recent shock loss to Mpumalanga Black Aces to score three goals past Ajax without a response from the Capetonians, a team which has caught the eye this season with its solid performances.

Malawia hot property Chiukepo Msowoya finally managed to show the PSL why he is highly regarded in his homeland with a stinger of a shot early on in the match to give the Bucs a deserved lead.

The Urban Warriors tried a come back, but were undone by a moment of madness from Thulani Hlatshwayo who unnecessarily handled to receive a second yellow card which saw him receiving his marching orders just before Ajax conceded a second goal. He had been earlier booked for a foul on an opponent.

Pirates immediately made use of their numerical advantage, and in the 74th minute, Daine Klate took advantage of an under pressure Ajax defence to score the home team's second goal. Substitute Tlou Segolega added the 3rd goal a few minutes before time.
