Madinda announces squad for Moza friendly

Terrence Mandaza has been included in the Warriors" 18-man squad for the Mozambique friendly

Zimbabwe Warriors' caretaker coach Madinda Ndlovu announced a provisional squad for the friendly match against eastern neighbours Mozambique to be played in Maputo next Wednesday, on 17 November.

In naming the 18 players who are expected to do duty against Mozambique next week, Ndlovu limited the call-ups to players in the South African ABSA Premier Soccer League and the local league.

The Zimbabwe Football Association opted against calling the European based stars to defray costs.

Ndlovu made only three notable changes to the squads which have been largely used in the 2012 Africa Nations Cup qualifiers against Liberia and Cape Verde, which both ended in draws for the Warriors.

Making a comeback to the squad is veteran striker Philip Marufu, now with FC Lupopo in the Democratic Republic of Congo topflight league. That league has been dominated by TP Mazembe, who are poised to retain the CAF Champions League title they won last year. They lead Esperance of Tunisia by 5-0 following the first leg of the Champions league final played in Lubumbashi two weeks ago.

Gunners tough tackling defender Daniel Veremu makes a welcome return to the national team, having been kept on the sidelines by an injury suffered early this year. The defender has tried his luck to break into the South African PSL in the pre-season without success.

Terrence Mandaza will finally get his chance to stake a real claim on the Warriors chief striker role, a problematic area for the Warriors in the last three years. The Platinum Stars striker is touted as a future gunman for the national team, having scored a record 42 goals in Botswana last season. There have been numerous calls to give Terror a chance.

Knowledge Musona is a new find for the Warriors, but he is not a trusted gunman. Only two players have the potential to fit the bill for that role among all Zimbabwean strikers at home or abroad.

Mandaza and Nyasha Mushekwi will perfectly fit into the chief striker role if given sufficient time. Friendly matches such as Wednesday's one becomes a perfect opportunity to try out combinations and see what works and what doesn't.

Warriors coaches must find out which striker can perfectly partner Musona upfront, or if Musona should at all be used as a striker. The Kaizer Chiefs sensation can equally be effective on the right or left flank from where strikers can benefit from his dribbling skills and speed.
