Musona show illuminates Soweto derby

Musona was on fire for Chiefs in the Soweto derby last Saturday, scored twice and created a 3rd

Kaizer Chiefs talisman Knowledge Musona finally delivered in a Soweto derby contest to come full circle and prove that he has come of age in South African football. The Amakhosi striker scored twice and created the other in the Phefeni Boys' 3-1 victory over arch-rivals Orlando Pirates in a league match played at the FNB stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Musona, Chiefs' player of the moment, has managed to be at the center stage of Chiefs cup and league success between last season and this season, but has often struggled to impose his ever growing authority in a derby situation. That all changed on Saturday.

Chiefs were the first to come out of the blocks, and their fantastic football show on a day in which they dominated their Soweto rivals, had the 20-year old Zimbabwean international as conductor of the Amakhosi orchestra.

In the 6th minute, Musona turned Pirates' player of the moment Lucky Lekgwathi inside out on the right flank, moved close to the bar line and made a clinical delivery, which the unfortunate Daine Klate could not but turn into his own net.

The own goal was a cruel blow to the in-form Klate who had beautifully backtracked to help out his defence ward-off the Chiefs attack. The former Supersport United midfield star seemed to struggle to shake-off the disppointment of scoring an own goal in a derby.

Klate tried as hard as he could to restore parity and make up for his 6th minute tough luck, but he failed to punish Thomas Sweswe a few minutes before the half hour mark when he intercepted the defender's weak clearance but only managed to blast a shot over the bar.

It is Chiefs' talisman Knowledge Musona who came back to haunt Pirates, and Lekgwathi was so unlucky with Musona on the day. The Buccaneers captain could only manage to clutter into Musona's feet after a beautiful movement on the right by the 20-year old star, and Chiefs won a  penalty. Musona took responsibility, and what a cool finish it was!

Pirates attempted a comeback soon after the break, but they failed to take advantage of Khune's sloppiness in goal these days. In an almost dress rehersal of his failure to stamp his authority in the Santos match in midweek, Khune failed to deal decisively with a free-kick early in the 2nd half, but Happy Jele could not punish the Bafana keeper.

As Pirates failed to make use of the few chances which came their way, Chiefs punished them further in the 60th minute when Musona intercepted a poor back pass from Rooi Mahamutsa, rounded off Moneeb Josephs neatly, and scored with a diving header to deny Mahamutsa a chance to make a clearance.

Great stars are confirmed as such in big matches such as the Soweto derby and cup finals. Musona, a potential footballer of the season, made a strong case for himself last Saturday against his greatest rival for the biggest single individual prize in local football, Andile Jali of Pirates.

The young star has not only been scoring goals for Chiefs, his passing game is such a beauty to watch. It will not be long before Amakhosi lose their most prized asset to a European team, if he continues in this rich vein of form. He is maturing very fast.

The Amakhosi star will be expected to lead Zimbabwe's attack when they take on neighbours Mozambique in a friendly match on Wednesday night.
