BBC Afro-Footballer of the year shortlist out, voting open

Samuel Eto"o is shortlisted for BBC African Footballer of the year

The BBC has revaled the shortlist of five African players from European club who will compete in a vote to choose the BBC African Footballer of the year for 2010.

The list of five is made up of two Ivorians, two Ghanaians and the Cameroonian captain.

Last year' winner, Didier Drogba of Chelsea and Ivory Coast is among the shortlist. Drogba won the Golden Boot award in England as his more than 30 goals helped Chelsea to win the double in England last season.

Fellow countryman to Drogba, Yaya Toure is a suprise inclusion on the shortlist. While there is no doubting the class of the Machester City man, Yaya did not play any leading role in helping his former club Barcelona win the La Ligaa title last season. If anything, Toure featured from the bench for most of the games in Barca colours.

A serious competitor to the crown currently held by Drogba is a trebble winner with Inter Milan last season, Eto'o. The Cameroon skipper was in scintillating form as he helped Inter win the Serie A title, major cup and UEFA Champions League.

Two Ghanaians, Andre Ayew of Marseilee in France and Asamoah Gyan of Sunderland found themselves on the shortlist, thanks to their five star performances for the Black Stars in their incredible run during the World Cup finals in South Africa between June and July, and the African Nations Cup earlier in January.

Voting for the winner is done online through the BBC website. Voting lines, which were opened on Monday 15 November will close on 10 December. The winner will be announced on 17 December.
