CAF deadline looming: Identity of Zim reps

[Posted 25 Nov 2010]
[By Brighton Mupangavanhu]
Zim must reveal the identity of CAF club reps by 30 November this year.

The deadline for the Confederation of African Football member states to register their representatives in the 2011 editions of CAF Club competitions is just under five days away, and Zimbabwe's soccer mother body is under pressure to reveal the identity of the nation's representatives.

Only yesterday, CAF sent the Zimbabwe Football Association a reminder that the identity of Zimbabwean club representatives should reach the continental body by 30 November this year.

“We remind you that engagement in Caf inter-clubs competitions including the name of your engaged club in - The 15th Edition of Caf Champions League, CL 2011- The 8th Confederation Cup, CC 2011 must reach the General Secretariat of CAF before November 30th, 2010," read part of the CAF circular to member nations.

The Premier Soccer League season in Zimbabwe is yet to be concluded, and the premier cup tournament, the BancABC Super8 tournament final is yet to be staged.

The PSL will be forced to send names of teams based on assumptions and estimations. It appears like the PSL and ZIFA will find their task easier in naming three teams who will represent the country in the CAF: Champions League and and the Confederations Cup.

The PSL title has effectively become a two-way horse race, pitting log leaders Motor Action and former champions Dynamos. Those two teams will automatically become Zim's two representatives in the Champions League.

CAPS United and Dynamos are set to tussle it out for the BancABC Super8 final. Regardless of the outcome of that final game, CAPS will be confirmed as Confederations Cup representatives for Zimbabwe.

The challenge that PSL and ZIFA are faced with is the identity of CAPS' companions in the Confederations Cup. PSL 3rd placed team normally qualifies for the last Confederations Cup slot if one of the participants in the premier knockout competition is already through to the CL.

As things stand, PSL will be obliged to forward Highlanders' name to ZIFA for registration with CAF. Bosso are currently placed 3rd on the PSL log, and are the best form team in Zimbabwe at the moment.

Zimbabwe are entitled to forward four representatives in CAF competitions, and have consistently done so in the last two years.

Gunners and Dynamos represented Zimbabwe in the CL this year, with Dynamos reaching the CL mini-league stage. CAPS and Lengthens represented the nation in the last Conf cup with CAPS falling at the last hurdle, and Zim did not have a representative in the mini-league format of the competition.
