CHAN draw: tough Group B for Zim, SA

[Posted 29 Nov 2010]
[By Brighton Mupangavanhu]
CHAN draw was conducted in Sudan on Saturday.Zim are in group B with SA, Ghana and Niger

The draw for the second edition of the Championships of Nations for African nations was conducted in the Sudanese capital of  Khartoum, at the Friendship Hall on Saturday.

The two hour session was illuminated by entertaining music and cultural events from the Sudanese. Only football players who ply their trade in the local leagues of their respective countries are allowed to take part in this tournament.

The official draw was conducted by Acting CAF General Secretary Hicham El Amrani, who assisted by officials of the Sudan Football Association. The Sudanese Minister of Youth and Sports, Haj Majid Siwar also attended the function in the capital.

Group B and C appear to be the toughest groups of the 2011 edition of the CHAN. Defending champions DR Congo were handed the toughest task of negotiating their way past a difficult Group C which includes giants Cote de'voire and Cameroon.

Zimbabwe Warriors, considered giants in terms of the CHAN competitions, were so unlucky to draw neighbors South Africa in Group C, and for a second year running, they will have to resume their interesting tussles with Ghana.

The band of home-based Warriors played out to a 2-2 draw against Ghana in their first match in Ivory Coast during the inaugural CHAN finals. Zimbabwe agonisingly surrendered a 2-0 lead to end up with a single point instead of a very possible 3 points.

Southern Africa derbies between South Africa and Zimbabwe are always too close to call. The Warriors have a slight edge over their northern neighbours, having beaten locally based SA team in the 2009 qualifiers. Zim also beat SA at the COSAFA finals in 2009.

Both Zim and SA admitted after the draw that Group B will be tough for the neighbours.

"Ofcourse we will be looking forward to it (the derby)," Simon Ngomane, South Africa's coach said after the draw.

"Zimbabwe are a very strong team. They seem to be growing bt the day," added Ngomane.

Benedict Moyo, who is responsible for the national teams and competitions in the ZIFA board described the draw and particularly the inclusion of South Africa and Ghana in group B as "tricky".

Niger are the fourth team in Group B, apart from Ghana, South Africa and Zimbabwe.

Results of Saturday's CHAN draw

Group A: Sudan, Gabon, Uganda, Algeria

Group B: Ghana, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Niger
Group C:
DR Congo, Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire, Mali

Group D: Senegal, Rwanda, Angola, Tunisia
