Gunners dent DeMbare's chances

Gunners threw spanners into the works for Dynamos by beating them 1-0 on Sunday

Gunners have, for a second year running, proved to be a very difficult team to play towards the end of the season, at least as far as Dynamos is concerned. Like they did in a crucial league match last season, Gunners took away maximum points from DeMbare in a vital match on Sunday.

In a match where Dynamos needed just a draw to catch up with log leaders Motor Action in terms of the number of points, Gunners threw their hopes into fire by beating them 1-0 at Rufaro Stadium yesterday. A victory could have seen Dynamos overtake the log leaders by two points.

David Rhediyoni scored the only goal of the match in the 3rd minute of the first half, and Gunners held onto the lead until the final whistle.

If anything, Gunners could have walked out of Rufaro with a much bigger margin had Norman Maroto and Tongai Mangwendere bagged in all the opportunities created in this match.

Despite the loss to Gunners, the title race remains tight, and what gives DeMbare hope is the fact that Motor Action will have to negotiate their way past Gunners themselves, and other giants like Highlanders and CAPS United.

Meanwhile, Highlanders continued with their terrific form, and on Saturday, Bosso beat Eagles 1-0 in Bulawayo to take their winning run to 9 games in a row.

Gunners FC, CAPS and Highlanders might be out of the race for the PSL league title, but they will have a say in who will win the league this year.

Gunners have already derailed Dynamos' chances of going top of the log for the first time in many months. Chando Kupisa also have a chance to dent the Mighty Bulls' title chances when they meet them in a week's time.

Motor Action will face a Highlanders side that is spitting fire at the moment, and a CAPS team that has proved to be unpredictable in the past few weeks. If they win these three crucial matches, then there is no reason to doubt their championship credentials.

Dynamos' loss on Sunday is proof that the title race for this season is likely to be decided either in the last match or last two matches of the season.

At this stage, it is difficult to say who are favourites to win the league title between Dynamos and Motor Action. Anything is possible. It is important to note that the Mighty Bulls, at 58 points have an advantage of a single point and a better goal difference of +30 as opposed to Dynamos' +24.

Permutations were made about how Dynamos would overtake Motor Action once the outstanding matches were finalised. That has now been done, and Mighty Bulls are still a point ahead.

It goes to prove that in soccer, as my Mentor Pastor Willard Makumbe Banda often reminded me, "a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush".
