Igesund's rescue mission at Swallows

Igesund has been confirmed as axed Rainer Zobel"s replacement at Moroka Swallows,

One of South Africa's Soweto giants, Moroka Swallows have replaced the departed head coach, German Rainer Zobel with Gordon Igesund, one of South African-born coaches of note. His main mandate to try and rescue the Dube Birds' sinking ship.

Zobel, was axed over the weekend following a disappointing 1-1 draw with defending champions Supersport United at the Dobsonville Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The Soweto giants had opportunities to wrap up the match and collect their first full set of points, and in the process save the former Germany footballer's job.

The Dube Birds' CEO Leon Prins appointed Igesund on Monday, and the four-time PSL championship winning coach, who signed a 6-months contract, understands that he has a mountain to climb.

"My job is to get Swallows out of relegation.

"But depending on if I like Swallows and they like me I could extend my stay. But I am not worried about the future only the present and that is to get Swallows back winning games,” Igesund said.

Igesund is well aware that at Swallows, he will have to start from a deficit, and will not have it easier than  at either Orlando Pirates or Mamelodi Sundowns with whom he won two of his four championships.

The enormous challenge at his hands has not diminished Igesund's appetite to perform a miracle at the Dube Birds.

“We have already lost 25 points. So it is like starting with a minus 25-point handicap. But I am confident in the potential of the players and my ability to lift Swallows.

"They are a famous sleeping giant of SA soccer and I want to wake them up. But first my priority is to get off the bottom of the table and start winning games.

"It is a massive challenge but I love this type of challenge and I am up for it,” Igesund added.

The replaced Zobel had been given a target of 4 points from the two games before Sunday, but he was relieved of his duties before he could make that a reality.

Prins is happy to have Igesund and believes that his experience in the PSL could help save the Birds.

“We believe Igesund is the right man for the job. We had plenty of applications but he was the only coach we spoke to and delighted he joined us and will get us out of trouble.”

Igesund's first match is a tricky assignment away from home against plucky Cape Town outfit Santos at Athlone Stadium on 11 December.

Saving teams from relegation is not new to Igesund, who performed similar acts when he managed to keep Maritzburg United afloat in their first season in the PSL in the 2008/2009 season.

Last season Igesund helped Free State Stars stay in the PSL.
