Young Warriors leave for COSAFA

[Posted 01 Dec 2010]
[By Brighton Mupangavanhu]
Young Warriors will play against Botswana and Swaziland in Group A of the COSAFA Under 20 tourney

The Zimbabwe Under 20 team will leave the country this afternoon for Botswana where the Metropolitan COSAFA Under 20 tournament will be held this year.

Players who have illuminated the competition in the past few years such as Kaizer Chiefs' star Knowledge Musona, Dynamos' newboy Archieford Gutu and Ajax Cape Town's Khama Billiart will not be available for Zimbabwe.

New players who are expected to be torch bearers of the newly assembled Young Warriors squad include defenders Lincoln Zvasiya of Monomotapa and Knowledge Machona of Eagles, while Kiglon striker Denver Mukamba is expected to provide the fire-power upfont.

COSAFA has demanded that participating teams bring a maximum of 25-member delegation for the the tournament. As such Zimbabwe were forced to drop one of the two assistants to the Under 20 coach. Railstars coach Mandla Mpofu had to be sacrificed.

Zimbabwe has always had strong teams who have performed well at the COSAFA tourneys in the past. The Young Warriors have won the comeptition a record six times.

However, the current squad is under pressure to carry forward the reputation built over the years. The young turks of Zimbabwean football last won the youth cup in 2007 when they Knowledge Musona scored all the three goals in a final match against South Africa's Amajita.

Zimbabwe are in a group that includes hosts Botswana, Swaziland and Malalwi, who unfortunately withdrew from the tournament due to financial challenges, leaving Group A with only three teams.

Here is the Young Warriors squad.
