Young Warriors off to flying start

Zimbabwe Under 20 team beat Botswana 3-0 in a COSAFA tourney match

GABORONE. ZIMBABWE’S Young Warriors got their Metropolitan Cosafa Under-20 campaign off to a flying start when they thumped hosts Botswana 3-0 in Gaborone yesterday.

The home team’s hopes were dashed on the opening day of the Youth Championships when Zimbabwe who are highly rated at this competition left them with plenty of work to do to progress from the group stages.

Monomotapa centre back Lincoln Zvasiya and Shooting Stars striker Simba Sithole scored in a five-minute spell on either side of half-time to post an early warning of the tournament-winning potential of the Zimbabweans.

Kiglon’s Denver Mukamba then sealed the contest when he struck from the penalty spot in the 71st minute of the game at the University of Gaborone Stadium.

Zvasiya, who is on the wanted list of South African Premiership side Bidvest Wits, converted in stylish fashion at the end of a flowing 42nd minute move from the centre of the park that saw skipper Sithole win possession from the opposition, square the ball for Mukamba whose clever pass beat the entire defence to leave Zvasiya with an easy finish.

A static Botswana back line was caught out again just two minutes into the second half as captain Sithole led by example with a strong-headed finish from Edwin Nkomo’s cross.

The Young Warriors’ full haul of points was confirmed when Mukamba slotted home from the penalty spot, having been fouled in the area and then rising up off the turf to take the kick himself.

Kudakwashe Mahachi was named man of the match in confirmation of a dominant performance where Botswana threatened early but once they had conceded, quickly faded away.

Botswana must now beat Swaziland in the next Group A game in Molepolole on Monday to keep alive their chances but with only the group winner advancing to the semi-finals, Zimbabwe have taken a giant step towards the business end of the tournament. — Sports
