Musona, Yeye lead Chiefs Telkom Awards haul

Musona was voted Striker of the Tournament

Knowledge Musona and Reneilwe Letsholonyane led Telkom Champions Kaizer Chiefs in an awards haul at the tournament's awards ceremony on Tuesday in Johannesburg.

Telkom, sponsors of the tournament, presented awards yesterday in four categories, Goalkeeper of the tournament, Defender of the tournament, midfielder of the tournament, striker of the tournament and finally Player of the tournament.

Player of the Tournament award winner will only be revealed at the PSL End of the Year Awards next year around May.

Yesterday, Chiefs swept all the awards on offer. Bafana Bafana keeper Itumeleng Khune beat the challenge of Moneeb Josephs of losing finalists Orlando Pirates and Shuaib Walters of Maritzburg United to win the award in his category.

Chiefs captain Jimmy Tau was selected as defender of the tournament ahead of Rooi Mahamutsa of Orlando Pirates who had a nightmarish cup final on Saturday night. The other losing contestant was Santos' new captain Wayne Arendse.

Reneilwe "Yeye" Letsholonyane was the best midfielder in the competition, and rode the challenge of two Pirates stars, Daine Klate and Andile Jali.

The "Similing Assasin" Musona pipped his strike partner at Chiefs Sthembiso Nyoni, a two goal hero in Amakhosi's triumph last in the final last weekend.

All winners walked away R100 000 richer yesterday, as Telkom richly rewarded winners.

Musona and Yeye have the opportunity to add another medal to the ones they already have, having been nominated for the coveted R200 000 worth of Player of the Tournament award. Talented Pirates ace Andile Jali is another nominee for the award.

There is no doubting that a Chiefs player is likely to walk away the winner, having dominated their opponents at every stage, despite their struggle to score against Santos in Polokwane in the semi-finals, only to win with a late injury time Musona goal.

Musona and Yeye are very strong contenders, and the winner is likely to come from the two team mates.

The young Zimbabwean appears to have a slight urge over his club mate, Yeye. He not only scored goals for Amakhosi, he created goals for his team mates and was a  complete team player.

If Musona wins the Player of the Tournament award, that will boost his confidence ahead of the marathon league, and this will catapult him to the greater heights he is expected to reach this season.

Expectations are high among Chiefs fans and neutrals that come the end of the season, Musona will be voted Footballer of the Season in South Africa. The youngster has played with the same amount of passion in both cup competitions and the league.
