African Champions make world history

Mazembe have made history by reaching Club World Cup final in Dubai

Reigning African Club Champions TP Mazembe of the Democratic Republic of Congo made world history yesterday when they became the first African club to make it to the final of the Club World Cup after beating CONCACAF Champions, Internacional of Brazil 2-0.

TP Mazembe's semi-final success will set up a final date with either reigning UEFA Champions League  title holders Inter Milan of Italy or Seongnam of South Korea.

The DRC and African champions made their history through goals by Milota Kabangu and Dioko Kaluyituka, who scored in the 53rd and 85th minutes respectively.

Internacional controlled much of play in the first period of the match, and Tinga was particularly menacing from the wings and the centre. The attacking midfielder created many opportunities for team mates, which were unfortunately wasted.

During the second half, Mazembe began to really hit back at the Brazillians and caused some anxious moments in the opposition half. But that was not before Internacional had made forays into their half and early on,  D’Alessandro combined with former Real Betis star Rafael Sobis to cause the Congolese some scare.

Mazember silenced the pre-match favourites with their first strike in the 53rd minute, when a superb counter attack ended with a clever but powerful half-volley from Kabangu beating Renan all systems out.

The Brazillians then poured forward in search of an equaliser, and thought they had it at some point when Giuliano failed to score in the box in a one-on-one with Mazembe goalkeeper Muteba Kidiaba who flung himself down desperately to block the striker's effort.

With acres of space created as a result of over-committing the whole team in search of an equaliser, Mazembe proved to be masters of a counter attack yesterday, when Kaluyituka attacked the gaps from the left to hit a ferocious shot past  Renan, to give the Africans a 2-0 lead in the 85th minute.

That goal proved to be a final nail in Internacional's coffin and confirmed Mazembe's place in the final on Saturday in Dubai.
