Eto"o was voted best tournament player as Inter Milan won Club World against against Mazembe

On Saturday, UEFA Champions League Cup holders Inter Milan of Italy underlined their credentials as a global club giant in football when they dashed to the ground African club Champions TP Mazembe's dream of continuing to write the history books by becoming the first ever African club to lift the Club World Cup title .

Mazembe had become the first African club to reach the final of the same ultimate global club tournament earlier in the week by beating Brazilian club and CONCACAF champions Internacional 2-0 in the semi-finals of the tournament.

Inter lifted the trophy following strikes from Goran Pandev, Samuel Eto'o and a late goal from Jonathan Biabiany.

The African champions' coach Lamine N'Diaye admitted after the match that his side was out-played by the colourful Europeans.

"They were much stronger than us and thoroughly deserved their victory. Experience won out this evening. Physically we were exhausted," N'Diaye observed.

N'Diaye however noted that though African teams may not as yet measure up to the competitive levels of their European counterparts, the continent has abundant talent and one day, an African team could lift the club world cup title.

"There are many good players on the African continent. But we are still a little way off where we need to be.

"Mazembe have taken an important step and another team can emulate this in the future. Africa has progressed - we saw that with Ghana at the World Cup as they came close to reaching the semifinals," added N'Diaye.

Eto'o's performance in the club tournament, where he won gold as the best player, could have moved him closer to being voted CAF African Footballer of the Year, and later even as FIFA World Player of the Year.
