Zim includes Musona in Under 23 squad?

Musona in Under 23 squad to play Zambia?

There is news that Zimbabwe has named an Under 23 squad set to play against Zambia in the All Africa games qualifier set for the weekend of 7-9 January 2011. What is concerning about the news is the fact that the full squad has not been released to the media, except 16 players.

Under 23 coach Friday Phiri has been quoted by as indicating that he hope to have an earlier camp beginning on the 27th December until end of festive season, to take advantage of the break.

“Zifa had indicated that the team would be going into camp on January 3 but our view is that the sooner we start our preparations the better,” Phiri is quaoted by as having said.

The same publication make mention of only 16 players, who will be part of the envisaged camp during the festive break.

Knowledge Musona, the red-hot Kaizer Chiefs striker is rumoured to be leading about 5 foreign based players and other experienced stars in that squad.

Tafadzwa Paul Rusike and Khama Billiart of Ajax Cape Town, are also said to have been named in the squad. Another foreign based star mentioned in the report is that of France-based Ovidy Karuru of Boulonge in Ligue 2.

Goalkeeper George Chigova, defenders Knowledge Machona, Lincoln Zvasiya and Edwin Nkomo, together with forwards Simba Sithole and Denvar Mukamba of the Under 20 team which finished 3rd in the just ended COSAFA/Metropolitan Under 20 championships in Botswana, have reportedly been included.

Other names mentioned include the inform Highlanders midfielder Joel Ngodzo, Gunners left back Qadr Amini the Dynamos pair of Timire Mamvura and Archiford Gutu, Motor Action right back Passmore Mamvura and Black Mambas midfielder Isaac Madziva.

By any standards, if coach Phiri is to succeed in having all the players mentioned in the Under 23 squad to face Zambia, there is every reason to believe that with good guidance, the team will qualify for the All Africa games finals.

ZIFA should endeavor to name the full squad instead of releasing the names of the full team in piece-meal fashion.

I just like this team, it should be an exciting team. Remember our dream team also started with the exciting Under23 team that included Peter (Sukuzonke), Agent (Ajira), Norman (Nomara - Muchina Wemajuzi) just to name a few. I am not just excited about the game against Zambia, but also the strong Under23 list that promises to take our football further from where the dream team left. I know Musona, Tafadzwa, Acheford, Ovidy, Amin, Khama as great players. I have not seen Simba Sithole but my following of the events in the Under20 team and the PSL tells me he is a great player. Good luck guys, even if we fail against Zambia I still beleive in these youngsters (including those have not mentioned) especially for our future.
