PSL Sponsorship deal for Zim ?

The government controlled mobile operator NetOne are said to have agreed to sponsor the Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League from 2010.

The PSL Management Chairperson Twine Phiri, who is also President and owner of PSL giants CAPS United, has confirmed the developments from capital Harare.

Speaking to local media, the PSL boss explained that the deal has not yet been finalised and some finer details will be concluded with the new sponsor in few days to come.

"There are a few logistics that we are finalising, but we hope to be through by next week", is all that Phiri is reported to have told the media.

There has been news of PSL Sponsorship deals before which never saw light of the day. The soccer-loving Zimbabwean public will have to wait and find out if its not all a dream again. The next few days will tell.

The Zimbabwe PSL has been without a sponsor ever since Commercial Bank of Zimbabwe (CBZ) pulled out as the main prize sponsor after last season. NetOne is now fondly remembered by local football fans as one of the businesses which made the historic visit to Zimbabwe by Brazil last week possible. The giant mobile operator is also remembered for the controversy which resulted in another giant local cellphone operating company Econet, withdrawing from sponsoring PSL some few seasons ago. This followed what Econet regarded as professional meddling when NetOne, a rival company, concluded a deal to sponsor CAPS United when Econet was the league sponsor.

Local PSL is reportedly ranked as the 5th best football league in Africa, despite most of its clubs reeling from financial problems. Zimbabwean soccer teams struggle to meet basic costs of running clubs such as paying salaries of the players, purchasing training gear and uniforms. Yet local clubs have excelled in continental competitions. Local glamour club Dynamos have qualified for the Champions League, while local rivals CAPS are through to the final qualifying round before the CAF Confederations Cup mini-league.

Meanwhile, the on-off Japan v Zimbabwe friendly match in George, which had been cancelled on Monday is back on the cards today. The match was scheduled to start at 13h00 this afternoon.
