Young Warriors beat Zambia in Lusaka

Zimbabwe Under 23 team beat Zambia 3-2 away in Lusaka

Zambia Under 23   (1) 2      (3) 3 Zimbabwe Under 23

The Zimbabwe Under 23 soccer national team placed one hand on the qualification ticket to the All-Africa Games in Maputo in 2011 by upstaging the hosts, Young Chipolopolo on Saturday afternoon.

The Young Warriors scored crucial three away goals in the first leg of this All-Africa Games qualifier in Zambia, and made their lives a lot much easier in the return leg set for the end of January.

Gifted striker Simba Sithole opened the account for the visiting Zimbabweans as early as the 17th minute, with young player of the moment Denver Mukamba getting onto the scoresheet to register Zim's second of the day on the 22nd minute.

Zambia pulled one back in the 27th minute through Zesco United winger Chileshe Knagwa.

The Young Warriors restored their two goal advantage in the 34th minute and the visitors completely dominated their hosts from there on, until a lte charge by the Zambians.

The Zambians' efforts were rewarded in the last minute when they grabbed a 2nd goal through another Zesco player, substitute Chakwa Lungu to give Zambia reason to believe that they can still cause an upset and qualify ahead of the Zimbabweans.

Zambia will need to win by two clear goals to advance ahead of favourites Zimbabwe. A scoreline of 3-1 or 2-0 or 4-2 will see the Zambians through to the first round qualification stage.

The task is an uneviable one for the Zambians. It is difficult to see the Young Chipolopolo team beating the talented Zimbabweans in their own backyard. If anything, the Zambians were lucky to get a second goal on the death in Lusaka on Saturday.

The Young Warriors team has been dubbed the "Best Generation" of young Zimbabwean soccer players after the so-called golden age of Peter Ndlovu, Methembe Ndlovu, George Mbwando and the likes of Alois Bunjira, Stewart Murisa and Chamu Musanhu, to mention just but a few.

Well, the generation of young turks led by Peter Ndlovu has nothing to show to justify the description "golden age". They did well though, in 1995, when Zimbabwe hosted the Games, and the Young Warriors reached the final where they lost 3-1 to Egypt.

Coach Friday Phiri still has the luxury of calling upon his foreign legion for the finals should Zimbabwe qualify or even the second leg towards end of January.

Red-hot striker Knowledge Musona of Kaizer Chiefs, Ajax Cape Town striker Khama Billiart, his club-mate midfielder Tafadzwa Paul Rusike and  France-based Ovidy Karuru are eligible for selection.

Meanwhile, Malawi boosted their chances of qualifying for the Games by beating Lesotho 3-0 in Blantyre also on Saturday afternoon. The Young Flames scored through Frank Banda after 13 minutes, Anthony Banda grabbed the second goal and Green Harawa added a 3rd.

Angola and South Africa's tie in Luanda will only be played at the Citadela Stadium on 6 February, with the second leg coming two weeks later. Amaglug-glug were late entrants and replaced Namibia who withdrew from the competition.
