ABSA Premiership title race tight

ABSA PSL title race has intensified

The fight to win the ABSA Premier Soccer League title in South Africa for the 2010/2011 season is far from being a two horse race between leaders Mamelodi Sundowns and second-placed Kaizer Chiefs.

Chiefs managed to reduce the gap between themselves and leaders Sundowns to only a point following their 1-0 victory over the log leaders on Saturday at the FNB Stadium, courtesty of a Kaizer Motaung goal in the second half.

Amakhosi are now sitting on 26 points, while Sundowns lead the standings with 27 points from the same number of games.

The striking feature of the ABSA Premiership in this first half of the season is the tightness of the competition. Only three points seperate log leaders and 4th-placed Ajax Cape Town, who travelled to Durban and returned with full points in a crucial 2-1 victory.

The top four teams are seperated by a point from each other. Fourth-placed Ajax sit at 24 points, Pirates have 25, Chiefs are breathing heavily on Downs with 26, a point away from the leaders' 27 points.

Orlando Pirates did themselves a huge favour by upstaging fading giants, champions Supersport United 1-0 away in Tshwane, and further complicated matters in the top three segment of the log. Now only two points seperate the Buccaneers from Sundowns.

Supersport have conceded that they cannot be able to defend the title which they won a record three times in a row in the past seasons. For now, the champions must contend with fighting against relegation, as they lie only 3rd from the bottom.

How Gavin Hunt and his team find themselves firmly in relegation zone must not only be difficult for the Tshwane team to understand, but probably for the rest of the ABSA premiership family too.

BeezSports will soon try to understand the slump in form of the champions this season.
