Spurs tie deal with Pienaar

Pienaar has agreed terms to move to Tottenham Hotspurs

High-riding Barclays English Premiership club Tottenham Hotspurs have agreed personal terms with Everton's Steven Pienaar to join the Harry Redknapp coached outfit. It is however not clear if the Everton star midfielder will join Spurs this January or later.

Spurs have beaten competiton from Inter Milan, Atletico Madrid and English Champions Chelsea are all believed to have been waiting to pounce on the South African star player who is set to walk out on his current club as a Bosman free agent at the end of this season.

Pienaar had stalled on a contract offer from Everton, after his proposal to be put on parity with fellow player Mikel Arteta who is currently paid 75,000 a week was ignored by Everton. The club's counter offer of 60,000 was obviously not good enough to Schillo.

If Spurs are to purchase Pienaar, they are unlikely to pay Everton any more than 2 million, but the last 16 UEFA Champions league contestants may opt to wait for May to get Schillo on a free.

Everton boss  David Moyes is understood not to be in favour of losing a key player like Pienaar mid-season, and has been quoted as having said that the value Pienaar would bring to the club can compensate for the loss of  2m in 6 months.

Should Spurs push through with the January swoop for Pienaar, any moneys generated from the deal could come in handy for Moyes, who is under pressure to generate enough cash to buy a striker and replace Yakubu Aiyegbeni who is set to move to Leicester City on an initial loan deal.

The prospects of playing champions league football were too hard for Schillo to resist. After having served Everton with distinction since joining them from Borussia Dortmund some years ago, Pienaar deserves his impending move to a top four team in England.

Schillo becomes one of the few African players to make a big money move in terms of personal terms, to a top European football club during this January transfer window.
