Chelsea now lead Spurs in Pienaar chase

[Posted 14 Jan 2011]

Chelsea have made a 3m firm offer for Pienaar

Chelsea Football Club have made an overnight giant leap to become front runners in the European clubs' pursuit of Steven Pienaar's signature, with a 3million offer for the Everton star midfielder.

Until yesterday, Tottenham Hotspurs were believed to have been the team set to snap up the Everton star, after having agreed personal terms with the player.

It has since emerged that the Blues have taken advantage of Spurs' complacency in assuming that the Pienaar deal was already in the bag, and Carlo Ancelotti seized the perfect opportunity to make a firm 3m offer to lure the South African to Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea want Pienaar NOW, and not at the end of the season. This is exactly not the kind of will  Harry Redknapp's Spurs showed in their desire to land the Bafana star midfielder.

Spurs have not yet made any offer to Everton for Schillo's services, and while Spurs hoped to take advantage of the fact that Pienaar could walk away on a Bosman free agent rule at the end of the season, the Blues have demonstrated their ability to understand the business of football better.

There will be little sympathy for Spurs if they are to lose Pienaar to the Blues during this January Transfer window. They have surely not accorded the African star the respect he deserves and the value and worth which every other Premiership club sees in the player.

Ancelotti is keen on boosting his side following the injury to some key players such as Yossi Benayoun who is out with an Achilles injury until March. Chelsea is desperate to put their championship fight back on track after months of a downward-spiral.

Pienaar is seen as a direct replacement for Benayoun because of the South African's versatility.Schillo can play on the left or right side of the midfield, and is equally at home attacking from behind the strikers.

Chelsea will not find it difficult to match or even better Spurs' 70,000 per week wage-offer to Pienaar. In fact, Schillo himself is looking for a wage of around 75,000 wages per week or better.

Pienaar refused to accept Everton's 60,000 improvement from his current deal and wanted to be put on parity with Mikel Arteta who earns 75,000 per week at Everton.

It is certainly not unreasonable for a player of Pienaar's ability and talent to demand the wages he is seeking.

If a player of Emmanuel Adebayor's stature earns 160,000 per week, there is nothing strange with ienaar demanding 75,000. Even if Chelsea offers him 100,000, that will still be commensurate with the player's worth in the eyes of many.
