Egypt lift inaugural Nile Basin title

Egypt senior national soccer team  pocketed over 400million Uganda shillings yesterday in the first ever Nile basin friendly tournament final match played at the military academy Olympic stadium in Egypt following a 3-1 victory over their opponents, Uganda.

The Egyptians scored through the double strike of Abdullah Elsayed Hamdy in the 37th and 69th minutes, with Mohamed "Gedo" Nagy's 80th minute goal giving them a comprehensive cup victory over the battling Ugandans.

The seven times African champions and three times consecutive winners of the African Cup of Nations defeated the twelve time CECAFA senior challenge cup winners Uganda 3-1 in a tournament organized by the seven countries which share the river Nile.

Ugandan Cranes’ Ceaser Okut successfully converted an 84th minute penalty following a foul in the box to Uganda's Mike Mutyaba, giving the Cranes a consolation goal.

Uganda's Cranes pocketed over 300million Uganda shillings for finishing second in the tournament and Democratic Republic of Congo walked away 160 million Ugandan shillings richer after defeating rivals Kenya 1-0 in the losers match, finishing in the 3rd position.

The Cranes missed an opportunity in the 40th minute, following Habibu Kavuma’s shot which hit the bar and Ceaser Okut’s 65th minute attempt which passed a few inches near the goal post.

The Ugandan goal keeper Hamuza Muwonge’s saves in the 73rd and 93rd minutes were instrumental in saving the cranes from conceding a 5-1 defeat, a scenario which happened to neighbors Kenya in the semi-finals of the same tournament.

Egypt defeated Uganda in the group stages 1-0 in the 93rd minute in a tough tie where the Ugandans exposed high level of football maturity.

In the semi finals, Egypt humiliatingly beat Kenya 5-1 and Uganda defeated Congo 1-0 enabling Uganda and Kenya to meet for the second time in the same tournament.

The Ugandan coach Sir Bobby Williamson praised his side for a good performance during the tournament and promised to make the Ugandan team better.

"We managed to play our best since we were playing a tough side, the seven times African champions," said Williamson after the match.

Sir Bobby Williamson helped the Uganda cranes lift the 2009-2010 Cecafa senior challenge cup in Uganda and helped the team to reach the semi finals of the 2010-2011 Cecafa cup where the team was defeated by hosts Tanzania 3-5 following a penalty shoot out.
