Chiefs win, Swallos revival continues...M'burg stun Ajax

Kaizer Chiefs fans were among the happiest supporters on Wednesday night

The ABSA Premier Soccer League action in South Africa on Wednesday night saw mixed results among the top four teams.

Kaizer Chiefs who suffered a morale-sapping 1-0 defeat against Ajax Cape Town away last Friday, bounced back to winning ways with a good 3-1 victory against ailing Amazulu Football Club at the world class FNB Stadium on Wednesday night.

Kaizer Motaung Jnr was a two-goal hero for Amakhosi in the first  half, and Zhaimu "Jimmy" Jambo scored a cracker of a goal in the 81st minute to give back Amakhosi a two goal cushion following a 78th minute reply from Tangeni Shipahu.

Chiefs could have come out of FNB Stadium with an avelanche of goals, had their star player Knowledge Musona been lucky in front of goals. Musona came very close to adding to Amakhosi's goals on more than two occasions.

Towards the end of the first half, with his team 2-0 up, Musona's effort crashed against the left upright. Minutes before match end, substitute Sthembiso Ngcobo was selfish not to pick up Musona who had a better sight of goal. His attempt rebounded and it was too difficult for the Smiling Assasin to direct it at goal, and his headed effort agonisingly went over the bar.

At Harry Gwala Stadium in KZN, title aspirants and strong contenders Ajax Cape Town choked under relentless pressure from home team Maritzburg United.

M'burg Utd beat the visiting Urban Warriors 3-0 to ease their relegation worries, a result which has sent shock waves in the entire ABSA premiership family.

Who would have imagined that a team that overcame the Soweto giants only on Friday would come down to earth so quickly and in the fashion witnessed at Harry Gwala?

The Urban Warriors are not the only serious title contenders to have dropped points in the past two weeks. Chiefs, who recovered from their Cape Town loss by cruising past Amazulu, beat log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns early this year to reduce the deficit to only a point.

Sundowns who recovered from their loss to Chiefs early in the year by posting a convincing 3-0 over M'burg last weekend, dropped two crucial points against Bloemfontein Celtic at Seisa Ramabodu Stadium last night.

Orlando Pirates are slowly but surely proving to be the PSL title dark horses. They have now caught up with their fellow Soweto giants Chiefs, and the two teams are now tied at 29 points, following the Buccaneers' 2-0 victory away at Golden Arrows.

Only 2 points seperate 3rd placed Bucs from log leaders Sundowns now. Chiefs have eased back into second place and lead Pirates only on goal difference.

One great story that is unfolding is that of the great escape that veteran and very successful coach Gordon Igesund is plotting at Moroka Swallows.

The Dube Birds posted only their second victory on the trot by beating fellow strugglers Mpumalanga Black Aces 3-1 at Dobsonville Stadium last night.

New signing Keketso Mmotong has proved to be a real revelation in the Birds' nest, and scored two goals. Siyabonga Nomvete added a 3rd to give Igesund only his second victory following last week's 1-0 win over Bidvest Wits.

Wits themselves suffered yet another loss yesterday when they went down 0-1 at the hands of Owen da Gama's Platinum Stars at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium.

Fading giants Supersport United could only afford a 0-0 home draw against fast improving Free State Stars at the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium.

At Athlone Stadium in Cape Town, Santos FC needed an injury goal to overcome the stubborn resistance of newly promoted Vasco da Gama.  Vasco have been revelation of the season in the PSL thus far. They have proved to be tough opponents for any PSL team.
